Tidy over from Chloe Tryon but after four dot balls, a misfield allows Amy Jones a single and the spinner then sends down another leg-side wide.

Just two from it but England are already nearly a third of the way to their target.

This does not look like an easy batting pitch but South Africa did not help themselves with their shot selection.

England are really making a statement here - this is a different side to the one we saw in January.

  3. Eng 19-0published at 3 overs

    Target 70

South Africa have packed the off side but when Amy Jones drives one just to the left of cover, she sets off for a single.

Tammy Beaumont isn't keen and it looks like there might be a costly mix-up but Jones gets back with no harm done in the end.

Boundary to end the over as Marizanne Kapp drops short and Tammy Beaumont pulls the ball away behind square.

Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones have scored 1452 runs as an opening pair in ODI’s, averaging 61 runs with six 100-plus stands.

No opening pair for England has scored more runs or had more 100-plus stands.

  5. Eng 14-0published at 2 overs

    Target 70

South Africa left-arm spinner Chloe Tryon helps England's bid to get this game won quickly as she fires one down leg.

It beats wicketkeeper Sinalo Jafta and reaches the boundary. Five wides.

  6. Eng 9-0published at 1.2 overs

    Target 70

The first boundary of the innings.

Tammy Beaumont times it superbly but it is an uppish drive that, thankfully for England, is just wide of the fielder at short cover.

Once it gets through, the ball races to the cushion.

  7. Eng 5-0published at 1 over

    Target 70

Amy Jones is beaten by a beauty from Marizanne Kapp first up. So close to both the outside edge and off stump.

The right-hander is off the mark next ball, though, with a thick outside edge that goes quickly down to deep third. Jones wants two and sprints back to get there safely.

Nice shot next ball, driven smartly through the covers. Not out of the middle and pulled back before the boundary.

England need to hammer home when they are in these positions. You cannot afford a slip up.

@John - think they should bat how they would if the target was 270 and not 70. Take the opportunities to score, get some appropriate time in the middle, and the NRR will sort itself out.

  10. Eng 1-0published at 0.2 overs

    Target 70

England are up and running as Tammy Beaumont guides the second ball to deep third for a single.

    Just the 69 more needed...

  11. England need 70 to winpublished at 12:24 BST 3 October 2025

Marizanne Kapp has the ball in hand and if there is one South Africa player who definitely won't have given this game up, it is her.

Tammy Beaumont will face up to the first ball with Amy Jones at the non-striker's end.

Well we're about to find out, John, because Laura Wolvaardt is leading out the South Africa team with the England openers not far behind them.

The TV graphic tells us England's required run-rate is 1.40 but however they chose to approach this chase, I fancy they'll be looking to score somewhat quicker than that...

Do England try and chase this in eight overs? Or do they accept that 15-20 overs will still give them a *huge* net run-rate boost, and remove any chance of a nervy collapse.

England bowled very well and the plan was pretty simple: hit the stumps...

  15. Postpublished at 12:16 BST 3 October 2025

Six down before the world's best spinner had even come on to bowl was not a great place for South Africa to be... and it was no surprise that it got worse once Sophie Ecclestone was brought on.

Charlie Dean also got in on the act as the Proteas crumbled...

What better way to spend the break than looking back at those England wickets - they came so quickly that you might have missed them after all.

Linsey Smith got things starting with the prized scalp of Laura Wolvaardt then bowled Tazmin Brits in her next over with Lauren Bell castling Sune Luus as South Africa found themselves three down inside five overs...

    Thanks, Elizabeth.

Well... I've got to be honest, I was not expecting that! What a start for England!

It looked like there might be quite a quick turnaround between innings as Tammy Beaumont ran off the field but no sign of the openers - or the South Africa bowlers warming-up - just yet so we might have the full half-hour break.

So, England need just 70 to get their World Cup campaign off to a winning start.

Here's Sam Drury to take you through their chase.

  20. 'A dream start'published at 12:00 BST 3 October 2025

England seamer Lauren Bell: "What a start that was. Linsey Smith set the tone up top then every bowler came on and did their job. Couldn't be happier with that start.

On Linsey Smith: "I think she's obviously a great match-up for the top order here but she's such a skilful player and swings the new ball so she'll be an important player for us moving forward."

On the pitch: "We've bowled pretty well on it so we'll see. Hopefull we've restricted them to a pretty decent score."

On aggressive approach: "We talked about controlling the game and with that we'll hopefully take wickets. That's happened today, a dream start and we couldn't be much happier."
