Josh Tongue has made the breakthrough! It looked unlikely but it has happened.

    Smith c Smith b Tongue 138 (Aus 544-8)

Josh Tongue is a bit more of a wicket-to-wicket-on-the-money type and his accuracy pays off in his first over as he snares Steve Smith for the sixth time in all cricket.

Tongue lands it fuller on a length, round about off stump, and squares Smith up. The Aussie gets a thin edge with a defensive poke.

England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith snaffles a straightforward catch behind the stumps.

Very sad to see the skipper walking off like that. It looks like it is his groin that is the problem.

It is amazing that he has got to all five matches with his injury record.

  6. Aus 535-7published at 127 overs

Jacob Bethell bowls the remaining two balls of Ben Stokes' over, conceding a couple of runs off the bat of Beau Webster.

We'll bring you any updates on Stokes' fitness and ability to bat as we get them.

Ben Stokes' day could well be over. This will be a very sad end if he does not come back on.

    He is clearly injured.

  8. Stokes limps offpublished at 23:17 GMT 6 January

Ben Stokes is limping and unable to complete his second over having bowled four balls.

He chews on his collar as he trudges off.

A blow to England's hopes of saving this game.

Nicely batted from Beau Webster. He came in in a nice position when there was not too much pressure on the game.

    A mature cricketer.

Enjoy it chaps. I’m afraid this is the first time this series I’m going to bed and leaving the cricket alone…

    Tom Fletcher, Sheffield

So Australia to put in another couple of hundred. Smith to get his double and England to be all out by 2am? Lovely.

Beau Webster knows how to score runs. He is better in that way than Cameron Green.

Webster understands his game from playing a lot of cricket.

  13. Aus 531-7published at 126 overs

    Lead by 147

Brydon Carse is his usual loose self at the start of the spell.

He gives too much width to Beau Webster with his third ball, and the Aussie all-rounder is able to use his long levers to cut the England seamer for four.

    Ho hum.

A typical Steve Smith precision shot early on. He is just getting himself in the groove.

  15. Aus 524-7published at 125 overs

Steve Smith punches a straight drive for a couple, then gives himself room and creams the final ball of the over from Ben Stokes through the covers for four.

There's a smattering of applause. The SCG looks half full at the moment.

    Thanks, Matt.

I have the dregs of Christmas - a solitary mince pie and a slice of limoncello panettone - to sustain me.

Ben Stokes has ball in hand. Steve Smith is idiosyncratically going through his rituals at the striker's end.

Ben Stokes has England in a group huddle, doubtless offering some platitudes or other about "pride".

England looked tried and bedraggled walking off yesterday. Ben Stokes' face looked crumpled.

It is difficult to turn momentum around when it is not going your way.
