England have got to show some fight with the bat now. I want to see some concentration, discipline and fight.

Boland c Brook b Jacks 0 (Aus 567 all out)

Harry Brook tweaks his field towards the end of Will Jacks' first over of the day and the spinner manages to winkle out the final Australia wicket as Scott Boland edges to first slip.

Boland retreated on to the back foot to one which gripped and turned from Jacks and it takes the edge of his defensive prod before nestling into the hands of Brook.

Australia have a lead of 183.

Late to the party in this innings, but Josh Tongue has now dismissed Steve Smith on four occasions in the five innings he's bowled to him in Tests.

Tongue averages 18.3 (73 runs, 127 balls, four wickets) at 31.7 strike rate across his Test career against Smith.

Of the 57 bowlers to bowl in as many innings (five or more) to Smith in Tests, only Shamar Joseph (29.0) and Chris Tremlett (30.2) have a better strike rate.

Bowl at the stumps. That is all we have said all series. If you are a fast bowler, bowl at the stumps.

Josh Tongue is one of the only bright sparks to come out of this tour.

    Starc b Tongue 5 (Aus 564-9)

Mitchell Starc will not be doing any hanging around, or accelerating.

Well bowled Josh Tongue, who has been exceptional this morning.

The England seamer bowls Starc with one that nips back into the left-hander to clip the bail on leg stump.

Starc was stuck on the crease with chewing gum feet, caught between working the ball to leg and defending.

Mitchell Starc can hang around but he can get on with it as well. We may well see some acceleration from him.

England’s performance has brought this to mind: “The less talent they have, the more pride, vanity and arrogance they have. All these fools, however, find other fools who applaud them.” Erasmus wrote those words in 1509!

This game will be over today. This is the worst prepared team sent to an Ashes series for many years. Commitment by 80% of the team is dismal. Bowling poor, batting poor, fielding dismal. Happy for it to be over today - management needs to held responsible.

Marnus Labuschagne has shuffled in alongside Steve Smith in the seats just outside the home dressing room, He'll be chewing his ear off for the next hour.

Brydon Carse slings one down the leg side and it clips Beau Webster's pads before racing away for byes.

Carse is down on his haunches after that over. He's looking weary. Been a long tour.

If he hadn’t already, Josh Tongue has cemented his place in the England bowling attack. The only bad this about his performance this series is that it didn’t start in Perth!

Replays of Ben Stokes bowling the final ball before he went off injured shows him touching his groin area. No word, as of yet, on a prognosis for the England skipper.

Josh Tongue continues to diligently work away on a length.

Ben Stokes' tired legs take a toll after bowling over a hundred overs in this series.

Stokes has delivered 101.1 overs across the eight innings in this Ashes, with only Brydon Carse (129.1) registering more overs.

Only on two other Ashes series has Stokes bowled more overs, 116.5 in his debut Ashes in 2013-14 in Australia and 105 in the 2015 Ashes in England.

The England captain wasn't needed as much in the last two Ashes with 63.3 overs in 2021-22 and just the 29 overs in 2019.

Has the lack of more quality in the England pace attack, and not using a frontline spinner, forced Stokes to bowl this many overs?

  18. Aus 550-8published at 130 overs

Steve Smith is sat outside the dressing room at the SCG shaking his head, annoyed with himself. There's a hunger there that few in England's team have.

Brydon Carse beats the outside edge of Beau Webster's bat before offering him a freebie with the final ball of the over, which he pulls for four.

Steve Smith wanted a few more. A good ball from Josh Tongue - he has got Smith out a few times.

There are some areas in this pitch now where if you get it right, there is movement.

  20. Aus 544-8published at 129 overs

A huge relief for England. The prospect of Steve Smith idiosyncratically chiselling his way to a double hundred was not an appealing one for many of us in this parish.

    Mitchell Starc the new batter.
