  1. Eng 185-6published at 56 overs

    Lead by eight runs

A huge stroke of luck for Ben Stokes! The ball leaps off the surface, catches the edge of his bat, and just goes over Cameron Green at gully. The tall all-rounder was at full stretch.

Stokes collects four. Scott Boland lets out a frustrated roar.

    Six off the over.

I feel like Australia will wish they had a spinner in their attack as well.

  4. Eng 179-6published at 55 overs

The ball after England take the lead, Ben Stokes goes for a reckless drive and the ball nips past his edge. Goodness me.

England having a bit of application and that bit between the teeth.

They are taking the time out of the game - you can bat for long periods of time.

    So, Australia will bat again.

And England have done that without losing a wicket in the first session.

Getting tired of the 'arrogance' talk, as if you could just bat normally and it would be an easy win. England haven't won at the Gabba since the 80s, so it's not like the alternative to Bazball has worked a treat. Test cricket is risk and reward. Yes, they might overdo it sometimes but you have to score runs. They have a plan and they stick to it. At least with this side you never fully count them out.

    Cameron Green enters the attack.

He gets a bit of bounce with his second delivery and the ball flashes past Ben Stokes' outside edge. The next delivery nips back into the England skipper.

    Back-to-back maidens for Australia.

The pitch itself is not quick, the pink ball getting soft doesn't do a great deal.

You have to keep trying different things. If it doesn't work, try different things.

Watching Steve Smith, he signalled to Brendan Doggett to go back over the wicket.

Love the optimism from around the world spanning Seoul to Sydney with even Glenn McGrath talking about England getting some kind of lead. Why didn’t they show this discipline yesterday when it really mattered?

Brendan Doggett is still peppering his overs with shorter stuff but is chopping and changing between bowling round the wicket or not.

He asks for a new shoe midway through the 51st over.

Four singles. One conceded with the old shoes, three with the new pair.

This is what makes watching England so frustrating. They CAN play to the situation. They just choose not to most of the time.
