If there is any movement or variation in the pitch, Scott Boland will find it.

There is a bit of a hush around the ground and the atmosphere is not building yet.

Regarding the gentleman (Chas at 05:00am) who believes England will win. It's certainly possible, but not probable. I'd give them a 1 in 50, or 2% chance of winning this match.

In the first hour, England have scored 28-0 in 13 overs at 2.15 runs per over.

In the Bazball era, in the 199 times England have batted for 13 or more overs in a session - this is their second slowest session in their of scoring rate.

With the sedate start, playing the situation and not going all out attack the usual Bazball way - England played only 20% attacking shots in the 13 overs today.

Of the 199 times England have played more than 13 overs in a session like we'd mentioned above, only once have England played attacking shots less often.

Do you think Stokes is sending a message?

Is he saying we don't have to flash at everything. There has been a suggestion that there might been words spoken.

Ben Stokes, taking a more sensible approach, sways out of the way of a couple before being cramped for room by one as Brendan Doggett comes round the wicket.

He connects with the final ball of the over, driving through mid-off. Doggett gives chase and England run three.

Scott Boland is being brought back into the attack.

The plan will be to bat cautiously until next session and then switch gears and get as many runs on the board as possible before the night session. They will want to give themselves something to bowl at under lights with the new ball. Whether they can make it that far, who knows.

Brendan Doggett goes short. Will Jacks goes after it. He misses it. Alex Carey, standing back, gathers it.

Doggett goes short. Jacks slashes at the rising ball and top edges onto his helmet. He takes a single. It's a no ball.

New helmets are being brought on (yes, he is being presented with multiple options).

If England can get some sort of lead and get into that night session then you never know.

It is about getting that ball softer.

Oooh hooo! Michael Neser is getting closer.

Ben Stokes leaves one which makes an emphatic thud as it crashes into Alex Carey's gloves.

Then, he inside edges the final delivery of the over onto his pads and the ball drops at his feet. That could have gone anywhere.

    Time for drinks.

England can still win this! This Test and the series. A century from Stokes, tailenders contribute another hundred plus, then we skittle Australia out for sub-170, England win! You heard it here first!

Brendan Doggett keeps Travis Head at short leg for Will Jacks and bowls a bit of short stuff.

As soon as Jacks gets off strike, Head is withdrawn. Ben Stokes take a single. Head jogs for his helmet.

Jacks tries to pull a short delivery and is lucky not to get an edge on it as it flies through to Alex Carey, who offers up an optimistic shout for the umpire. Jacks isn't looking comfortable against this bowling.

Don't go flailing around out there because you're just going to get out, but it has been a good start to the day. Will Jacks and Ben Stokes are knuckling down.

Michael Neser looks the most likely to make a breakthrough for Australia.

Bowling with the wicketkeeper up and Travis Head at short leg, he gets a couple to rear up at Will Jacks. One yields a thick edge but fortunately for Jacks, it goes safely behind square.

Jacks has 12 (36) and Ben Stokes has 18 (63).

This Bazball-era side are infuriating to watch so much of the time, but I'll give them this - how many past England sides would give fans that 'just maybe' belief to still get up at 4am with the thinnest sliver of hope in this dire match/series situation?

Ben Stokes and Will Jacks exchange singles before the skipper sensibly dots out the remainder of the over, including swaying out of the way of a Brendan Doggett bouncer. Is that the first one of the day?

In the daylight of the first session, Steve Smith, fielding in the slips, has opted for sunglasses. He'll be hoping this match is over before has to call for the black tape.

Stokes and Jacks have looked to play the situation with the cautious start so far today. They've only played 16% attacking shots today compared to 23% in the 35 overs yesterday.

Typical England. We just thought we were going to win the series easily, no preparation, no acclimatisation, no idea. We are getting what we deserve, nothing!

Ben Stokes can play in this mode. Before he went doolally at Headingley in 2019 he was two off of 70 balls.

Oooof. Ben Stokes edges the ball onto his inside left thigh and recoils in pain. A quick rub and he's ok.

Will Jacks gets on strike for the final ball of the over and for some reason he decides to flash and miss at a nipping delivery from Michael Neser. Hmmm.
