Will Jacks has shown exceptional patience with his shot selection in this innings so far.

He's defended a very high proportional of the deliveries in the channel outside off and scored when the Australian seamers have drifted on to the stumps or offered him a few short deliveries to play his preferred pull shot. Jacks has scored only 1 run of the 27 deliveries he's faced in the 6-8m traditional good length range.

A very tough chance, and feels harsh to call it a drop.

Will Jacks flicks Brendan Doggett to the leg side and Travis Head, under the helmet at short leg, gets a finger on it.

Brendan Doggett is the bouncer man. He is only playing his second Test match and it is his job to bowl the bouncers every ball.

Doggett is bowling short on a pitch which doesn't have much life in it with a ball that is soft.

Brendan Doggett decides the best way to winkle out Will Jacks here is to pepper him with short-pitched bowling. Jacks has looked to be positive but with control, and steers a pull for a single to get off strike.

You have got to remember that it's the hope that kills you.

But you have got to have hope, otherwise what is the point?

Don't think about the result. If you're worried about the result, then you're not focused on what you're doing now.

    Lead by 32 runs

I've just been pondering the prospect of the declaration, Ryan. What's more likely is England get to the cusp of the night session and then try to give it a smack and they'll probably end up all out with a few more runs on the board.

Unless, of course, they think they can bat through until tomorrow...

Final ball of Mitchell Starc's over draws a leading edge from the bat of Ben Stokes - and gasps from the crowd - but it plops safely into the turf.

This partnership between Stokes and Will Jacks worth 81.

What’s a realistic target here for England? Do we need Stokes to pull a ton out of the bag or are we playing for a declaration before the evening/pink ball session?

England's 59 runs from 24 overs in the first session is the fewest runs they have scored in a session during Ben Stokes' captaincy and Brendon McCullum's management.

Ben Stokes square drives Cameron Green for a couple through point.

England's players watching on the balcony in their training gear looks infinitely more upbeat than they did at the close yesterday.

A high bar was set with the 6am update. Sorry to disappoint but there are no Dean Martin references at 7am.

In better news, England are STILL BATTING.

They were 134-6 overnight, trailing Australia by 43 runs, and the feeling was that it could all be over quite quickly.

However, captain Ben Stokes and Will Jacks played out the first wicketless session of the series to take England to 193-6 at the break – a lead of 16 runs with four wickets in hand.

The only real chance of note came when Stokes edged Scott Boland over a leaping Cameron Green at gully.

Twenty minutes or so into the middle session and England's lead has grown to 28 runs. Stokes is unbeaten on 41 (122) while Jacks has 32 (77).

This gives me a neat excuse to mention Asa Tribe has a brother called Zak, who also plays for Jersey. I've always wanted to write 'when two Tribes go to war' in a BBC Sport live text commentary so nice to tick that off.

Anyway, Mitchell Starc continues round the wicket, attempting to find one of the cracks in the pitch at the Gabba.

Thankfully, not much to alarm Will Jacks and Ben Stokes. A single apiece.

  15. Eng 201-6published at 61 overs

The bespectacled Asa Tribe has played 26 T20 internationals for Jersey, in case you are wondering.

Will Jacks gets a full delivery from Cameron Green on his legs midway through the second over after the interval and he deftly flicks it for four through mid-wicket.

That brings the 200 up for England.

  16. Eng 194-6published at 60 overs

Asa Tribe is a Jerseyman who plays for England I think, Guy...

Will Jacks dabs Mitchell Starc into the off side with relative ease to bring England their first run of the session.

There's a half-hearted attempt from the Australian fans inside the Gabba to get behind Starc as he runs in to bowl.

Ben Stokes defends and leaves the remainder of the over.

Great to watch another hundred from an Englishman this week... Asa Tribe for the Lions at Allan Border Field. Decided to boycott the Test and stroll down the road and watch these lot for free instead. Tribe looks very, very comfortable against Test-capped bowlers. Bethell poor dismissal for 71.

Mitchell Starc goes wide of the crease, round the wicket, to Will Jacks.

He starts with a couple of dots.

Jacks has called for a new bat so there's a slight delay.
