It did seam back into Travis Head from around the wicket and he will be disappointed.

Marnus Labuschagne, who has been in good form, will be keen to get out there and knock off these runs for Australia.

Alex in Birmingham: Some of the bowlers have had a woeful series, in terms of stats. Gus Atkinson, one wicket. Jofra Archer has three wickets approaching 50 a piece. Brydon Carse expensive. Mark Wood nothing. Only Ben Stokes with any wickets.

Doesn’t bode well for preparation when supposedly this was our best-selected bowling attack to take on the Aussies. Good first innings in Perth (albeit mostly Stokes) and nothing at all since.

    The players are in position.

Australia are 33-0 chasing 65. They need 32 runs to win and take a 2-0 series lead.

Gus Atkinson will get us back under way.

    I'm all for time off.

I'm OK with them [England's players] going to Noosa because they have done all the work for the right preparation for Perth - lost.

Right preparation for Brisbane - lost. Not great, but you do need a break. Get to Adelaide a bit earlier.

Get away, recharge, whatever they want to do and that is fine.

They will need that for a freshen up and to get that confidence back.

  9. What's happened so far...published at 08:58 GMT 7 December 2025

We’re still going at 9am GMT! But Australia are on the brink of taking a 2-0 series lead.

England were 134-6 overnight, trailing Australia by 43 runs, but instead of the inevitable collapse, captain Ben Stokes and Will Jacks had other ideas.

They played out the first wicketless session of the series to take England to 193-6 at the end of the session, leading by 16 runs.

It was a largely chanceless seventh-wicket stand of 96 (221) – Stokes edged Scott Boland over a leaping Cameron Green at gully in the first session and Jacks saw one drop just short of Josh Inglis in the covers in the second – and it took a spectacular reaction catch from Steve Smith to break the partnership.

Shooting to his left, he snagged a one-handed grab just above the grass at first slip to remove Jacks for 41 (92).

Stokes brought up his half-century off 148 deliveries in the following over, but Jacks’ departure triggered a flurry of wickets.

Stokes edged Michael Neser behind to Alex Carey to depart for 50 (152), Gus Atkinson threw his wicket away by pulling needlessly to Smith at mid-wicket, and Brydon Carse was caught by Smith in the slips to complete a maiden Test five-wicket haul for Neser (5-42).

England all out for 241, with the final four wickets falling for 17 runs after Stokes and Jacks’ spell of resistance.

Chasing 65, Australia are 33-0 heading into the third session, with Travis Head on 19 (18) and Jake Weatherald on 10 (12). They need 32 runs to win.

Jack Rule: Now I’m all for the laws and playing regulations but this really is where common sense needs to take over. Just take the 30 minutes and finish the game off now. What benefit is it to anyone to string this out?

I thought Archer came out with a bit of fight.

It is so easy to roll over in a situation like this, but actually England today have probably had one of their better days on this Ashes tour.

  17. Australia 33-0 at dinnerpublished at 5 overs

With the match seemingly a foregone conclusion, Australia looking to chase this down in quick time, it's time for the players to head for a cup of tea and some butties.

  18. Aus 31-0published at 5 overs

Travis Head is up on his heels and he opens the face to use Jofra Archer's pace to guide the ball down to third for a single.

Jake Weatherald does not look quite so comfortable against Archer's pace.

Four singles off the over, though, and Australia are coasting at the halfway point in their pursuit of 65.

All his five wickets in that innings came in the channel outside off at an incredible 2.4 average and 1.38 runs per over (5-12 off 52 deliveries)

Yes, the batting has been wildly inconsistent and has its flaws - but why is no one commenting on the fact that this isn’t a 500-run pitch? We bowled too short and dropped too many catches, that’s what has lost us this Test.
