  1. 'Australia isn't a place for weak men' - Stokespublished at 09:54 GMT 7 December 2025

England captain on Ben Stokes on what goes on in the dressing room when the team is struggling: "Lots of communication. We sit there and watch what is going on and can see what Australia are trying to throw at us.

"It is up to us as players to go out with a plan. It seems to be a constant theme at the moment that when the game is at a pressure moment, Australia keep outdoing us. They say Australia isn't a place for weak men. We are definitely not weak but we need to find something. We need to sort it.

"I absolutely believe in that dressing room. I have full belief in the players in there and the coaching staff. We have to win these next three games. We have been 2-0 down before and know what we have to do. We ain't going to shy away from the battle but we do need to look at where things have gone and sort them out pretty quick."

  2. 'Need to show a little more fight' - Stokespublished at 09:49 GMT 7 December 2025

England captain Ben Stokes: "Very disappointing. I think a lot of it to me comes down to not being able to stand up to the pressure of this game, this format, when the game is on the line.

"In small passages we have been able to bring the game back into some kind of control and then let it slip away. It is very disappointing, in particular because of the ability of the players we have in that dressing room. We need to think a bit harder and deeper about those moments and show a little more fight when it is needed.

"If I could have put my finger on it I would be able to tell you. It is not a skill thing.

"It is not down to skill. You have got to dig a bit deeper and find out what the thing is that we seem to keep doing in the big moments of the game. We will be having some conversations that I will be keeping in the dressing room."

  3. 'Played the big moments well' - Inglispublished at 09:47 GMT 7 December 2025

Australia batter Josh Inglis to TNT Sports: "A great game of cricket. I think a lot has been spoken about the last few days and I think we've played the moments well. Obviously in pink-ball cricket timing is a big thing when you are batting and bowling so it's been awesome.

"To play in the Ashes is amazing. A great crowd here at the Gabba all week and obviously with my English background as well there was a bit of extra spice! I had a great time, would have liked some runs personally but to get the win is huge.

"I think sometimes these big series are won and lost on big moments so just a lot of communication out there, and from the guys in the shed, about when they are coming. We do recognise those moments well and did this week.

"There's obviously still three games to come and England are terrific cricket team. We won't be taking them lightly at Adelaide. We're a close group, around the same age. I think it helps us identify those moments with guys growing up together knowing each other."

On the Stokes run-out in the first innings: "Was it the moment? I'm going to say yes! I haven't stopped watching it. As a wicketkeeper you don't get too much time to practise your fielding but I do really enjoy it and it's nice when it comes off."

On whether Australia were worried when Ben Stokes and Will Jacks were set: "There was no panic. I thought that's something we did well today. We changed plans at times but we never went chasing wickets. When you do that you can leak runs, like we did yesterday before the break. We stuck to our guns and when the twilight came we took those wickets."

Mitchell Starc, unsurprisingly, has been named player of the match.

He took 6-75 in the first innings and 2-64 in the second.

Not content to just shine with the ball, he top-scored in Australia's first innings with 77 (141) at number nine, including a crucial 75-run stand with Scott Boland.

Steve Smith is a brilliant captain.

He reads the game great, he plays the field, he brings the field in at the right time to force the shot. England tried their best, but it was all too late.

Jofra Archer's spell and Gus - they bowled nicely. I want to see my bowler bowling 150kmph on the first morning in Adelaide.

I want to see that contest again between Archer and Smith.

Archer has so much talent. He is the one bowler I look at and think if he gets it right he could have a Mitchell Starc week for England.

  6. 'Good banter with Archer!' - Smithpublished at 09:41 GMT 7 December 2025

Australia captain Steve Smith: "It just felt right to play a few shots. He was obviously bowling quick and I thought I'd hit a few up and try to get hold of a couple. I tried to finish it quick. There's a bit of a storm coming round so wanted to get it done by playing a few shots. High percentage with the short boundary behind me so wanted to take it on.

"I thought the boys played exceptionally well. Our first innings batting the tail were unbelievable. The bottom four batted for 53 overs or something like that which allowed us to get into the dark last night and to take six wickets got us front of the game. Will Jacks and Ben Stokes had a good partnership today and you never know what would happen if Stokesy is still at the crease."

On words exchanged with Jofra Archer: "That stays on the field. It was good banter. He's a good competitor and comes hard at you so it was good fun."

    Briefly, there was hope.

A 96-run (221 balls) seventh-wicket stand between Ben Stokes and Will Jacks to start building England's lead. The threat of storms around Brisbane...

But England's tail couldn't replicate Australia's effort on day three, losing 4-17 to slump from 224-6 to 241 all out.

Despite losing two wickets, Australia were always going to chase 65 with ease.

Steve Smith is becoming a really good interim captain. He doesn't lose too many.

That is another eight-wicket victory. Pure dominance from Australia. They fought really hard with the ball and fought with great consistency.

Steve Smith wants to get this done.

He smacks the opening delivery of Jofra Archer's fifth over for four. Two balls later, he miscues a pull but still picks up four behind the wicketkeeper.

    And then... SIX!

Words are being said between Archer and both batters in between deliveries.

Good over from Gus Atkinson, bringing the wicket of Marnus Labuschagne and getting some "ooohs" from the slips thanks to a Jake Weatherald play and miss.
