Emilio Gay's fought hard, played a few very elegant shots. He's an elegant player, it's hard to be fluent out there today.

A good start for Gay, a good delivery from Nathan Smith and a good 20 minutes for New Zealand.

Emilio Gay, England's new opener, has impressed.

    WICKETpublished at 32 overs

    Gay c Blundell b Smith 57 (Eng 126-3)

Edged and gone - the end of a fine innings from Emilio Gay.

Just enough movement away from the left-hander from Nathan Smith to find a feather of an edge.

The ball just carries through to Tom Blundell behind the stumps and Gay departs for a well-made 57.

Warm applause from around the ground as Gay makes his way off the field.

The foot holes have been sorted to Nathan Smith's satisfaction and they're back under way.

A beauty from Smith soon follows with the ball whistling millimetres past Emilio Gay's outside edge as he goes forward to defend.

In Test cricket in England over the last 20 years, of all deliveries to have pitched between 9-10m from the stumps, the one to dismiss Jacob Bethell is the lowest the ball has ever reached the stumps.

    Lead by 151

We're going to have a short delay because New Zealand seamer Nathan Smith is not happy with foot-holes where his front foot is landing.

Meanwhile, it is looking a little gloomier at Lord's. Still dry, though, and if the forecast is to be believed, rain should not be a concern today.

  7. Eng 124-2published at 31 overs

    Lead by 151

England's lead extends beyond 150 as Joe Root gets two with a drive plinked into the gap in the covers.

A firmer, better timed straight drive follows but he can't get it past the mid-on fielder.

  8. Eng 121-2published at 30.2 overs

    Lead by 148

Change of angle from Kyle Jamieson after drinks, he over the wicket to the left-handed Emilio Gay.

The second ball of the over scoots along the ground but, unlike the Jacob Bethell dismissal, this goes well wide of the off stump.

Yeah, Jacob Bethell didn't have much chance with this one, Mark.

It is the only wicket to fall since lunch.

Is that Bethell dismissal the first Test wicket below sea level?

A single dropped into the covers by Emilio Gay is the only run from the Nathan Smith over - and that's drinks.

Another good hour or so for England and, in particular, their debutant opener.

Without getting too carried away as we tend to do, fair play to Gay for this effort. Hard to think of harder conditions for an opener to make their debut than in this match. Lovely to see an England opener with an "old school" style 50!

Joe Root is off the mark with a boundary. Not one of his finest but an outside edge that is quickly to ground and wide of the slips counts all the same.

The former England skipper is then hit on the pad by an in-swinger from Kyle Jamieson, bringing a muted appeal.

    That was sliding down leg.

Emilio Gay is the first England opener to score a half-century on Test debut since Keaton Jennings in 2016. Gay is the first England opener to score a half-century on debut in a home Test since Andrew Strauss on this ground in 2004.

Well played young man, a really good knock, composed and unflustered. Just starting to surge through the veins, it looks like he's enjoying himself out there.

    Eng 116-2

Emilio Gay reaches his half-century on Test debut!

It comes in a fine over for the England left-hander, 16 from it in total.

He starts by guiding the ball through backward point for two before throwing his hands at a wide one from Nathan Smith.

I think he wanted to get that a bit squarer but four is the end result.

And again. Much more control this time, opening the face and running the ball along the ground between the slips and gully for four more.

Two clipped through square leg takes him to his fifty from 84 balls before a gorgeous flick through mid-wicket gives Gay a third boundary in the over.

As soon as Alex from Wales' comment (14:42) was posted, I knew a wicket was coming!

    Dom, Oxford

I blame Alex from Wales for that.

Alex in Wales, what did you do?

Emilio Gay drives nicely out to the fielder at deep point, just a single but that brings up the 100 for England.

Joe Root takes a couple of steps down the track to Kyle Jamieson as he faces up for the first time but then lets the ball go, wide of off.

Come home from the IPL? Jacob Bethell could have been hitting red balls all day every day since March and still not have kept that out.

That's tough for Jacob Bethell, that's an absolute pea roller. Good luck playing that, it rolled along. It's a poor pitch.
