    It's not as consistently erratic as Lord's but that was as bad as anything we saw at Lord's. That's unplayable. If that was straight, that's all over.

    A pea roller from Josh Tongue as some iffy bounce in the pitch at The Oval draws some nervous looks.

    It lands on a length from Tongue but skids through along the turf which leaves Rachin Ravindra awkwardly attempting to dig it out.

    Ravindra's mindset not affected, though, as he pings a drive beyond the dive of Jofra Archer at mid-off for four from Tongue's next ball.

    I don't actually know what Rachin Ravindra is doing. This is the first over by a spinner that he's faced. It looked ugly the whole stroke really, I don't think he really he needs to be loft at this stage in a game where New Zealand aren't safe here yet.

    Ben Jones' stat about Rachin Ravindra's charmed life, coupled with the fact that the NZ batter has put down a few chances in this series leads me to think that he is currently one of the 'uncatchingest' players in Test cricket. Maybe I've had too much USA sport this week.

    Rachin Ravindra skips down the pitch to the final ball of the over from Joe Root and miscues a bit of a slog which Jofra Archer does well to stop at mid-on.

    Joe Root decides he's the man to make the breakthrough.

    His first delivery, round the wicket, pitches and skids into the pads of Henry Nicholls' defensive prod and England appeal.

    Root decides against the review. The television replays show it was the right call with it going on with the arm rather than straighten.

    Brendon McCullum is pictured clutching a walkie talkie - a la Elliott in ET - presumably relaying some crucial tactical tidbits from the balcony.

    Josh Tongue is a little full to Rachin Ravindra with the final ball of his fifth over who he deftly clips it from right under his nose for four.

    The Kiwi batter effortlessly clips the penultimate ball of Sonny Baker's over through mid-wicket for four.

    It's an interesting time of the game because Rachin Ravindra will give you a chance, we've seen that but he can take the game away from you.

    If he starts to play well, he will take the game beyond you within a session quite comfortably.

    James Rew appeared to close his hand too quickly attempting to cling on to that catch.

    It was a tough chance because it kept really low. It went to James Rew fast but he should have taken it.

    Josh Tongue induces a drive from Rachin Ravindra and a thick edge flies to Rew's left.

    The Somerset wicketkeeper has the ball in his glove after diving but it pops back out.

    You have to wonder. If England bowled like this, with these fields, on the morning of day two, would NZ start the second innings with a 100-run lead? I am not sure they would.

    He concedes his first run off his 16th delivery after Henry Nicholls manages to nudge one into the leg side for a single.
