England's batting has just been off it. The expected average (i.e. the quality of the balls both teams have bowled) has been identical, 31.6 - but England are on track to significantly underperform that.

  2. Eng 236-7published at 64 overs

Kyle Jamieson sends down a maiden to Matthew Fisher, with one short ball rebounding off his back and looping to the slips.

No-one is cheeky enough to appeal that one.

Matthew Fisher arrives at the crease with some work to do.

He edges his second ball from Matt Henry, but the ball drops short of slip.

A single gets him off strike, and Henry slams a delivery into Jofra Archer's pads - via a nick of the bat.

Such a big wicket because Jordan Cox you would think would have been so important for England to get this lead down to a manageable amount.

That's not England want at all. Perhaps Cox was a little casual there.

Well, Jordan Cox isn't hanging around to enjoy that batting track.

The debutant clips Matt Henry to Tom Latham, who has positioned himself at short mid-wicket.

The New Zealand captain makes no mistake with the catch, holding on diving to his right.

England's last senior batter departs, it's down to the tail now.

This pitch feels like a really good batting deck. You get so well rewarded.

Jofra Archer waited, drifted through and timed it very well.

  9. Eng 235-6published at 62 overs

Jofra Archer gets going in style, twice drives Kyle Jamieson for four past point.

Between those two shots Jamieson did jag one past Archer's bat.

  10. Eng 227-6published at 61 overs

Well, Jordan Cox won't mind that.

Matt Henry delivers a ball on the pads and Cox tucks it away for four through square.

The only scoring shot of the over, so Jofra Archer will face Kyle Jamieson in the next over - he failed to score off 11 balls yesterday evening.

Jordan Cox faces five dot balls from Kyle Jamieson to start his day, then guides the final delivery of the over through backward point for a single.

Blue skies at The Oval, it looks like a lovely day for batting.

England will hope they can enjoy as much of these conditions as possible.

The teams are out there, Jordan Cox, on 22, will face Kyle Jamieson from the Pavilion End.

Jordan Archer is at the non-striker's end - he's yet to score.

I fear the weather forecast of sun all day will make for easy batting conditions for New Zealand’s 2nd innings. I think it could get quite ugly today unless Cox and the tail can pull of something special.

England are of course without captain Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson after a certain nightclub incident, and yesterday's showing plenty of the crowd might have wondered what could have been had they been present.

We've got a fresh round of County Championship matches today, and we've got a man on the scene...

    Hello there.

Things can only get better for England... right?

After a dismal day yesterday, they resume at The Oval on 222-6, still trailing by 169.

Debutant Jordan Cox, who has Jofra Archer alongside him, will need to knuckle down this morning if he is to dig England out of their hole.

Let's see what he can do...
