There were a couple of pressure moments in this game and England have responded well, which for me adds to the 'if onlys'.

If we go back to the first Test at Perth where they were dominating the game.

In this game they were dominating right towards the end but didn't let up.

They won the crucial moments and didn't have a bad 20 minutes, whereas in the other games they had a bad 30 minutes. In this game they didn't.

  2. 'My dream was always to play for England'published at 07:10 GMT 27 December 2025

England's man of the match Josh Tongue, speaking to TMS: "Felt really good. Obviously, a pitch that helped us bowlers, but we still had to put the ball in the right areas for long periods of time.

"That fuller length is where we got our success.

"Obviously, winning the toss on day one, there is a bit of pressure on the bowlers when there is green on the wicket. Gus went down, and I thought Stokesy and Carse bowled exceptionally."

On the Barmy Army: "The whole series they have been amazing. Coming to the MCG, 90,000 on Boxing Day, they have been so good, and it is so good to play in front of them.

"My dream was always to play for England. This is top of my list, playing an Ashes away from home with the support of the Barmy Army. I can't really describe what I am feeling at the moment."

It certainly has, Joe - for all of us!

And here is that winning moment, ending a near 15-year wait for an England Test victory in Australia...

  4. 'A long time coming' - Rootpublished at 07:04 GMT 27 December 2025

England batsman Joe Root, speaking to TMS: "It feels great - a long time coming. There has been a lot thrown at this group in the last couple of weeks. The character and response from everyone has been great. The togetherness of the team, I guess.

"We were put on a challenging surface, speaking as a batter. The way we found a way to win here is down to the way we played over a period of time.

"Being brave enough to take the game on when the game isn't in your favour.

"Today, we found the balance of it really well. We saw in the first innings that if you allowed bowlers to bowl that same length and the same ball, it was doing so much, there was going to be one with your name on.

"Jacob [Bethell] coming in and playing like that as well, shows great skill, nous, bravery and courage. A lot of questions were asked about your method and we stayed true to it.

"Not everyone does it the same way, and it is understanding how you want to go about it and score your runs.

"It is not about survival, it is about scoring runs. My method is different to everyone else in that team, but it is understanding and playing with conviction with the surface that is presented. To chase 175 on there is because of a brilliant effort with the ball as well."

On the pitch: "Rather than having a go at it. The argument is was it too one-sided - bat v ball. People are more qualified to judge that. It was certainly challenging from my point of view.

"You have a world-class attack and the ball is moving a considerable amount. Your job is to get on the right side of the result.

"When we had our opportunities in this game we really did take them.

"You're always disappointed when you lose a Test match. You look at the opportunity in Perth. Presented with a similar kind of situation. We tried to do what we did today, and it didn't work out.

"If we win in this fashion there it is completely different. You have to play with conviction and trust in your method.

"I'm proud to be part of a group of players that have produced a performance like that on the surface."

This England team does your head in. They are so good on their day, and so bad when they are not.

If this gives one or two players a kick for next time - to make sure we are more ruthless and we are fighting for the Ashes in Melbourne - then perhaps it's not a wasted tour after all.

  6. 'We were courageous in the way we operated'published at 06:59 GMT 27 December 2025

England captain Ben Stokes: "Really good. It's been a tough tour, we're over the moon we got on the right side of a result. It'll be sunnier now, to be a part of a team who has won a game in Australia after such a long time, it's a really good feeling.

"We play for some many different things. The support we get around the world is very, very special, there's constant noise. The boys out in the middle hear it and they feel it, the guys over there might have some pretty sore heads tomorrow.

"After the couple of days leading up to this Test, there was quite a lot thrown our way. We made sure we stayed focused on the task at hand, a lot of credit has to go to the players and the staff. A very proud captain here of the boys in the dressing room.

"The way the cricket was played was short and sharp. It was very tricky. We looked to take a positive approach on everything, it was heavily favoured towards the bowlers.

"The way we went out today was exactly the right way to chase it down, you can't allow good bowlers to land it in dangerous areas. I thought we were courageous in the way we operated.

"Josh Tongue, what an occasion for him. Five wickets on Boxing Day in front of a huge crowd. Absolutely awesome. Jacob Bethell, a crucial knock in tricky conditions. The partnerships they were able to build were exceptional."

  7. 'Pitch probably too much in favour of bowlers'published at 06:57 GMT 27 December 2025

Australia stand-in captain Steve Smith: “Tricky one. Obviously a very quick game!

“Had we got 50 or 60 more across both innings then we might have been there at the end but credit to England, they came out today, bowled really well this morning and didn't let us get away.

"Then the way they started with the bat, they were very aggressive, got a few away and probably softened our ball a bit - it didn't offer as much from that point."

On the pitch: "It did a fair amount for the whole game. Just probably when the ball just softened after a few lusty blows from their top order, it went a little bit less, but without that, it was still going to offer plenty.

"I think [it was in favour of the bowlers] a little bit too much. It was tricky, no-one could really get in. When you see 36 wickets across two days, that's probably too much.

"It did more than they probably wanted to. If we drop it down to 8mm [of grass], that might be about right."

  8. 'All our bowlers did exceptionally well'published at 06:55 GMT 27 December 2025

Player of the match Josh Tongue speaking at the post-match presentation: "It's what dreams are made of. Waking up on Boxing Day, a few nerves, but to get a five-fer it's a really special feeling.

"The Barmy Army have been unbelievable these past four games, we've done it for them.

"I was in a tough situation with my body, potentially retiring. I'm glad that I put in the hard work, playing for England, it's what I've always wanted.

"We knew there was a bit of grass on it [the pitch]. We were making sure we were brave with our lengths, all our bowlers did exceptionally well."

A couple of days ago this tour was very close to falling apart and a shambles. What the players had to deal with from Noosa, from the fallout from that. When you are 3-0 down and the Ashes are gone you start thinking about the flight home and the negative side.

It's very easy to hunker down and look after yourself. I know it wouldn't happen under Ben Stokes, but it might have done. On this pitch they found a way. It's a little bit too late for this series but for the character of this team it's really important they showed how much it meant to play for England.

There is a bittersweet feeling, and it is a bit after the Lord Mayor's Show. But you only have to rewind 36 hours when it was doom and gloom and it was down to those 11 people to deliver a performance on a wicket that is different than what they thought it would be at the beginning of the game.

This is only the second time England have conceded the first-innings lead and then successfully chased down a target in a Test in Australia. The last and only time it happened was back in 1895 in Melbourne.

  12. 'We are so lucky with the support we get' - Rootpublished at 06:45 GMT 27 December 2025

England batter Joe Root on the Barmy Army: "Very special occasion. We are so lucky with the support we get. Look at the amount of people that are here.

"They do it everywhere. We are so lucky to have them. Really pleased they can enjoy this alongside us too."

On Jacob Bethell: "Outstanding. The conviction he played with, the smarts that he had. Using the crease and making it difficult for the bowlers to hold length. Takes bravery and takes courage and it takes a lot of skills to execute as well as he did."

I mentioned Joe Root and Ben Stokes a few minutes ago and the cameras caught a moment between the two of them just after England clinched the win.

There was a big hug after a brief conversation that I'm pretty sure went something along the lines of "at last!"

  14. 'To experience a win here is important'published at 06:39 GMT 27 December 2025

England batter Joe Root: "Obviously to lose the series is very disappointing. It was really important that we showed a lot of character for the rest of this series.

"There has been a lot thrown at this team. The way we have responded this last two days, it has been excellent. I was a very fast forward Test match with the surface we were presented with.

"We showed a bit of bravery today in the way we approached things with the bat. That is why we have won the Test match.

"I have been on the wrong side of the result a lot here. The fact we managed to get across the line today is excellent and hopefully we can improve on this next week as well."

On batting in the final innings: "I was pretty confident by that point. Disappointed to get out at that stage. But that wasn't to be, to win the game is the most important thing.

"Really pleased and proud of all these lads. Quite a few of them on their first tour - to experience a win here is important."

A rollercoaster of a Test match.

The pitch has come in for some criticism, but both teams have played on it. A win is a win, and they were desperate for it.

They have been under the cosh and criticised for a couple of months now. They have done their captain and coach a favour.

You have to go back to Sydney in 2011 for the last time England triumphed in a Test in Australia.

So this is a first win in Australia for two legends of English cricket: Joe Root and Ben Stokes.

It's hard to say they don't deserve it for all they've given England over the years.

ENGLAND WIN A TEST IN AUSTRALIA!

The Ashes may be gone but after just under 15 long years and 18 previous attempts, England have won an Ashes Test down under.

Four leg-byes get the job done. How they got over the line doesn't matter, they have.

    The drought is over.
