    Beauty from Brydon Carse!

Australia's dangerman is gone and that is a huge wicket for England.

Over the wicket, tight line and the ball nips away to beat the edge and just clip the off bail.

Fantastic bowling to lift England's spirits and keep them in this game.

Does salvaging pride mean winning, John? Realistically, I think this pitch would have to flatten out plenty for them to get anywhere close to that.

Meanwhile, six come from Josh Tongue's over courtesy of a drive from Travis Head and an outside edge from Steve Smith as he is squared up.

Brydon Carse is going to return from the other end.

England, on a good day, are quite capable of scoring 370 runs. Don't lose faith in the players, and keep being negative about the team's batting performances in previous matches. If they can restrict Australia to a lead of 300, then they can salvage their pride in this match.

    Lead by 115

Travis Head doesn't need much width and Ben Stokes offers him just enough, full outside off, and the left-hander clobbers the ball over mid-off for four.

A single ends the over and there is about half an hour left in the session.

England will be desperate for another wicket or two before lunch.

England need an opening bowler to go alongside Gus Atkinson and I personally would be looking for Ollie Robinson to come in.

Clearly, he has had an issue with Brendon McCullum, but he is a high-class opening bowler with a huge amount of skill.

Positive intent from Steve Smith to start, driving firmly through the covers.

The massive boundaries at the MCG mean he has to settle for three, though.

Josh Tongue nips one back to him later in the over, left by Smith and it hits him in the box. Ouch.

Thick edge to end the over and he gets two more.

England's cordon is miles too deep. Two catches dropped short of Jamie Smith yesterday, now that one almost died on Root.

It just bounces into Joe Root's fingers.

Good delivery once again from Josh Tongue getting that angle in and nipping away.

That has only just carried, the England cordon can get up by a yard or so.

    Labuschagne c Root b Tongue 6 (Aus 61-3)

    Given!

I think that's a pretty clear decision as the ball bounces up but off Joe Root's fingers rather than the ground.

Marnus Labuschagne disagrees and walks off shaking his head.

But he has to go and it's good bowling from Josh Tongue to find the edge and provide a crucial breakthrough.

More seam movement away from the right-hander. Here comes Steve Smith.

England think they've got Marnus Labuschagne caught at slip.

The Australia batter isn't moving, though. He doesn't think this has carried...

You never know with Ben Stokes. Look back to Adelaide in the second innings when he didn't bowl, then he suddenly arrived the next day and he bowled.

If you have niggles and strains, you can't bowl. I just think his body is tired and weary.

England have to be realistic with Ben Stokes, he has a superhero kind of status.

He thinks he can do everything, but realistically, I don't think he is going to be an ultimate all-rounder going forward.

England have got to start searching for that kind of cricketer in the United Kingdom.

A single for Travis Head takes the lead to three figures.

How many can England realistically chase on this surface?

200? 250 maybe if it starts to flatten out a little?

The PitchViz Bounce Rating (on a scale of 1 to 10) for this pitch is currently at 9.9 - the highest for any Test match in the ball-tracking era (since 2007).

The last time we saw a PitchViz Bounce Rating this high, combined with comparable seam movement on offer, was between India and South Africa in Cape Town in 2024 - that Test concluded in just two days.

That's a very real concern, Jack, yes.

Maiden over from Josh Tongue to Marnus Labuschagne.

It's a good job the England seamer has found a good rhythm here because he, Ben Stokes and Brydon Carse will have plenty of bowling to do without Gus Atkinson.

The way to stop that? Take wickets. Quickly.

I would think that Ben Stokes is keeping a bit in the tank because of Gus Atkinson.

Someone needs to tell him quite quickly that England need to get quick wickets.

  20. Postpublished at 00:36 GMT 27 December 2025

Next few hours? We won't be seeing Gus Atkinson bowl again today then - and, frankly, England need to hope we don't.

They need to bowl Australia out in the next few hours to give themselves any chance.
