Very irresponsible cricket from Ishan Kishan. The field is back that for shot and there's no need to go for it. India are falling back a little here. I wouldn't be happy if I was the coach.

    Ishan Kishan c Dawson b Curran 49 (Ind 157-5)

After a magnificent drive off one knee over cover for four, Ishan Kishan swipes it high into the off side, where Liam Dawson claims it with ease.

Fine bowling by Sam Curran - will he be back as England's Test all-rounder? Let us know what you think.

  3. Ind 151-3published at 17 overs

India work Jacks around for some singles, but they need to go hard over the last three to get to 200.

  4. Ind 150-4published at 16.2 overs

Ishan Kishan breaks the shackles, a reverse sweep off Will Jacks bringing the first four for three overs.

On the balcony of one of the hotel rooms are two men in inflatable pig costumes. I'd like to know more about them...

It was an odd innings from Shivam Dube. England's bowlers softened him up with some aggressive stuff early on and he never really settled. Without the likes of Virat Kohli there isn't really that glue in the middle order which makes them a little bit more exposed.

Anything short of 200 will be a little disappointing for India on a good batting surface. England made 300 here against South Africa last year and they will remember that.

Liam Dawson once again proving why he should have been Englands frontline spinner across all formats over the last three years - How the back-to-back County Championship MVP was so cruelly overlooked I will never know.

    Dube c Banton b Curran 5 (Ind 146-4)

    Superb stuff from Sam Curran!

He mixes and matches his variations throughout the over, conceding a wide and a single, before Shivam Dube loses his patience, lifting him high to off where Tom Banton takes another fine catch in the stiff breeze.

    England on top.

It's a good length from Will Jacks who is not giving it that much air and finds a bit of extra bounce. You can see the tactics to make the India batters hit to the bigger part of the ground.

India's batters need to consider giving themselves a little bit of room.

We haven't seen Will Jacks' off spin since the power play, when he claimed Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's scalp, but here is the Surrey man.

And it's a decent return, getting some bounce and turn to frustrate the India batters to just a single per ball.

  11. Ind 138-3published at 14 overs

Jofra Archer had bowled pretty well, until spoiling it all with his last - a wide one that Ishan Kishan slices away to the rope through where the slips would be.

Archer looks crestfallen as he pads away to the boundary.

  12. Ind 133-3published at 13.3 overs

Shivam Dube is in, and Jofra Archer tests him with a rapid short one. Dube plays it well, in front of the peak of his helmet to leg - reminded me of the hook shot in the old 'Brian Lara Cricket' game.

I’m just glad for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's sake, he’s not English, the press would ruin him as a player by the time he was 18. On the flip side, I wish he was, as he looks a real talent.

That's a very good delivery from Liam Dawson - that in-between length and Shreyas Iyer was through the shot.

A good catch from Tom Banton as well. The stage is set for Shivam Dube who can hit a few long balls.

  15. wicket

WICKETpublished at 15:34 BST 4 July

    Shreyas Iyer c Banton b Dawson 37 (Ind 130-2)

That is a really, really good catch from Tom Banton!

Shreyas Iyer goes aerial, being dragged down the track by Liam Dawson. The India skipper sliced his shot, and Banton ran in, steadied himself and judged the catch perfectly in the swirling wind.

    Ind 128-2published at 12.3 overs

It felt like Shreyas Iyer was ready to explode, and explode he does - in a cricketing sense - pulling a short one form Liam Dawson a long way back over the mid-wicket boundary.

Since 2025, Shreyas Iyer averages 96 against spin while batting at number four. Among 69 batters batting at four or lower with over 250 runs in this period, only one other batter averages more than him (New Zealand's Tom Bruce averages 135).

Shreyas is also yet to be dismissed by spin in 2026.

  18. ouch!

    Ind 116-2published at 15:29 BST 4 July

Iyer has had his fingers taped off, and looks happy to be off strike having run when he took that blow to the glove.

Shreyas Iyer is in some pain, he is being seen to by a physio.

He might need more than the old magic sponge, here.

  20. Ind 116-2published at 11.4 overs

Boooof! Ishan Kishan hits one straight past Josh Tongue at light speed - but it smacks into the stumps, saving a certain four.

Shreyas Iyer makes up for it, though, deftly guiding the next past Jos Buttler for four, but Tongue has a measure of revenge off the next delivery - he gets one to climb and painfully strike Iyer on the fingers.
