    That beats Jamie Smith.

Mitchell Starc just about manages to get some bat on Ben Stokes' short delivery, helping it down the leg side.

It passes the dive of England's wicketkeeper and runs away to the boundary.

    On Will Jacks' expensive 1-101...

It's never a good thing when you bring up a hundred as a bowler.

I'd be tempted to bring Joe Root on to power through some overs.

  3. Aus 311-7published at 74 overs

Will Jacks returns to the attack with England likely looking to work through a few overs swiftly and reach the new ball.

Four singles come off his over, with the third of those ticking the spinner's runs conceded column into three figures.

Really busy innings from Alex Carey. He's defended just 13% of the deliveries bowled to him, the lowest figure he's recorded in a 50+ Test score.

  5. Aus 307-7published at 73 overs

Mitchell Starc swipes at the final delivery from Ben Stokes, but gets nowhere near it.

We've got about 40 minutes left in the day.

A terrific innings from Alex Carey. That has taken Australia away from a lot of trouble.

    Aus 307-7

Alex Carey brings up his third Test century - and this one is on his home ground!

The Australia wicketkeeper drives Ben Stokes into the covers and runs three, bringing up his ton in 135 balls.

A crucial innings for the home side - he came in with Australia reeling after losing two wickets in three balls at the start of the afternoon session and has moved them on from 94-4 and the threat of collapse.

Woken up to another episode of ‘Bad Bazball Batting’ but it’s the Australian version! I much prefer it!

That would have been salt in the wound if you take that catch.

  10. Aus 302-7published at 72 overs

    Up, up in the air!

Facing Brydon Carse, Mitchell Starc miscues a shot over mid-wicket. Will Jacks gives chase from the in-field but sees the ball land safe near the rope.

No matter - Carse over-stepped again so it wouldn't have been out anyway.

Two runs plus the no-ball bring up Australia's 300.

Not over yet. I can see the Aussies adding another 100 runs here. Remember, England have not batted and that will show us what the wicket is really like.

England have not bowled that well consistently. They have not bowled in consistent areas. They have been a bit all over the place, but they have picked up seven wickets.Nearly 300 runs on the board. I don't think they will be overly disappointed with it if they can pick up these last three wickets now without too much damage. I think they will be very happy with the day's play.

    Thanks Sam.

A crucial hour coming up - if this pair can push onto the close then Australia can head to the dressing room moderately happy with their rear guard efforts, even if they'll be frustrated by the nature of some of their wickets today.

If England can wrap up the innings then there's a big opportunity to build a first innings lead with a solid innings on what appears to be a fairly benign pitch.

Meanwhile Australia take a couple of singles off Ben Stokes' over.

Mitchell Starc is picking up the length and hitting through the line. Some of the English batsmen will not mind seeing that.

  15. Aus 294-7published at 70 overs

It's Mitchell Starc's turn to attack, waiting for the right ball from Brydon Carse before pumping it over mid-on and away for four.

And again! Dead straight this time. Top shot from the big fast bowler to take Australia ever closer to 300.

With a little under an hour left in the day, it's time for me to hand you back to Mike Peter.

A pair of singles from the fifth over of this Josh Tongue spell. Will that be him done for the day now?

There are cheers from the home fans as Alex Carey keeps himself on strike with a single from the last ball.

The left-hander is one hit away from a third Test century now...

  17. What you've missed on day onepublished at 06:00 GMT 17 December 2025

If you set an alarm for 6am, here's what you've missed today.

Australia lost both their openers in the space of six balls, with Zak Crawley taking a superb catch to remove Travis Head.

Having seen their side slip from 33-0 to 33-2, Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne added 61 runs before lunch, while the former was dropped on five.

But after the interval Jofra Archer took the wickets of Labuschagne and Cameron Green in the first three balls of the afternoon session, leaving the home side flailing.

Khawaja and Alex Carey calmly rebuilt, with the former reaching 82 on his return to the side as a late replacement for Steve Smith, who withdrew from the Australia side shortly before the start of play.

He was dismissed by Will Jacks just before tea, with Australia reaching the break on 194-5.

Since tea Carey has continued to accumulate, reaching 94, but has lost partners Josh Inglis, who was bowled by Josh Tongue for 32 to end a 59-run partnership, and Pat Cummins.

  19. Aus 282-7published at 68 overs

Not overly convincing from Alex Carey from the penultimate ball of the over.

He stretches to reach a full ball outside off from Brydon Carse but nearly drags it back onto his stumps.
