Assaults on police officers in Wiltshire have almost doubled in a year, up from 55 in 2016/17 to 103 in 2017/18.

Wiltshire Police chief constable Kier Pritchard said although most assaults on staff and officers were minor, no violence should be tolerated.

He said: "Facing this type of treatment simply because you work for the police is disgraceful and there should be no excuse or tolerance of it.

"As a force we are now working on introducing additional measures to ensure that our officers have increased protection going forward and are adequately supported when they become victims themselves."

New measures being explored include spit and bite guards, enhanced taser numbers and support for officers and staff abused and assaulted on duty.

Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson said: "As with any job there are highs and lows, but being injured and abused on duty should not be part and parcel of working for the police.

"It's paramount that the law protects our officers, staff and volunteers whilst they're protecting us."

A balcony overlooking a swimming pool in Bath has been closed due to safety fears.

Local mother Caroline Ambrose spotted a 23cm gap at the bottom of the safety railing, at Bath Sports and Leisure Centre, which she claims is big enough for a baby or toddler to crawl through.

Government building regulations say such gaps should be no bigger than 10cm.

Bath and North East Somerset Council - which owns the centre - said it was committed to ensuring people remain safe and it will not reopen until the issue has been resolved.
