    Glasgow City Council are monitoring the situation along with the emergency services.

    They said building control services would not be able to take over the scene until it was confirmed the fire had been fully extinguished.

    A spokesperson for the local authority said there were no residents in the affected area.

    Road closures are expected to remain in place until further notice, they added.

    Teams at Network Rail have been keeping across any potential fire damage at Central Station.

    Following an update at midnight, a spokesperson said: "As things stand we've not identified any significant damage to the station. We'll get this fully assessed at first light."

    The huge fire close to Glasgow's Central station is reported to have started in a vape shop on Union Street, eventually engulfing a four-storey Victorian building.

    Known as Union Corner, at the junction of Union Street and Gordon Street, the B-listed building was constructed in 1851 and pre-dates the station itself which opened in 1879.

    Designed by architect James Brown of the firm Brown & Carrick, it was built for Francis Orr & Sons, a well-known Glaswegian stationery and publishing company.

    For years there was an Irn Bru advert on the rooftop and a red neon Bells sign on the dome itself.

    Among the businesses that until recently occupied the ground floor were the Blue Lagoon fish and chip shop and Sexy Coffee.

    I’ve just walked down Hope Street, which is the other side of Glasgow Central Station.

    The Grand Central Hotel was earlier evacuated but there are no signs of fire on this side of the station.

    The air is thick with smoke and there are a number of firefighters and fire engines on the street, but they’re not involved in any firefighting activity at the moment.

    The police cordon makes it difficult to see fully along the front of Central station, however there are no visible signs of fire or any heightened activity on Gordon Street - the location of the main entrance to the station.

  7. Advice for rail passengerspublished at 23:46 GMT 8 March

    ScotRail has cancelled all services in and out of Glasgow Central on Monday.

    Services will not call at Glasgow Central low level but will pass through the station to stop at Argyle Street and Anderson.

    They said “limited replacement transport” was available and apologised to passengers for any inconvenience.

    Services from Glasgow Queen Street are not affected.

    The Caledonian Sleeper will start its journey on Sunday night from Edinburgh.

    Travel has been arranged with ScotRail for passengers with a valid Sleeper ticket between Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh on the 21:00, 21:30, 22:00, 22:30 and 23:00 services.

    The Sleeper will leave at 00:00

    Avanti West Coast “strongly advised” against travel to or from Glasgow Central on Sunday.

    The operator recommended all passengers planning to travel on Monday check the latest information on their journeys before setting off.

    TransPennine Express said all services between Glasgow Central and Manchester Airport and Liverpool Lime Street would not run on Monday.

    Delays and cancellations are also expected on the operator's routes between Edinburgh and Manchester Airport and Edinburgh and Newcastle due to staff being displaced.

    Affected passengers can use their tickets for travel on Sunday or Monday if services resume by Tuesday or Wednesday.

    Michelle Cohen, who lives in Renfrewshire, has a painting studio opposite the station on the other side of Union Street.

    “I'm heartbroken, I’ve looked at that rooftop and skyline every single day," she said.

    "It’s the heart of the city and it’s gone.

    "A friend called me and I rushed here. I just wanted to be here. It’s part of my life."

    Phil Clark saw the fire when he was trying to get a train to Paisley

    Phil Clark has also been watching the situation from a cordon on Renfield Street.

    He had been trying to get a train to Paisley from Glasgow Central for St Mirren's Scottish Cup match against Partick Thistle when he saw the initial fire.

    He said: “I’m stunned. I used to work in Glasgow, all these building are iconic to me.

    “When the dome came down I thought the whole thing was gone.

    “That’s a part of Glasgow gone now. God knows what that rest of it looks like.”

    We understand that the flames have not yet breached the Glasgow Central Station building as the walls are keeping the fire at bay.

  10. Guests evacuated from Grand Central Hotelpublished at 23:18 GMT 8 March

    Guests at the Voco Grand Central Hotel on Gordon Street have been evacuated.

    Those staying at the hotel were ordered to leave immediately at about 19:00 as the fire spread.

    Posting online, external, the hotel said guests had been relocated to the Radisson Blu on Argyle Street.

    Striking new images show the dome on the building on the corner of Union Street and Gordon Street has collapsed.

    Firefighters on high ladders have been photographed spraying water into an empty space where the cupola once stood, and where flames are clearly visible.

    Several floors inside the building also appear to have given way due to the fire.

  12. Passengers struggling to get home to Glasgow as services cancelledpublished at 23:04 GMT 8 March

    For passengers travelling by train tonight, the disruption caused by the fire was compounded by service cancellations.

    An Avanti service from London Euston to Glasgow was cancelled due to a member of train staff becoming unwell.

    Passengers were directed to board the next train leaving an hour later which meant the train was extra busy.

    This service is now due to terminate at Motherwell where Avanti have promised to secure onward travel for passengers.

    I was travelling home to Glasgow from Sheffield via Leeds and Carlisle. On arrival at Carlisle, we were advised by Avanti staff to board the 22.22 TransPennine Express service to Edinburgh, where onward travel would be arranged.

    Currently waiting at Lockerbie, train staff say there’s a freight train up ahead which is "struggling" and we’ve been told to wait here while it resolves "technical difficulties".

    When I got to the scene in Glasgow city Centre tonight, flames were licking the roof around the dome of the building. Shortly afterwards the dome collapsed.

    From street level now, behind a cordon on Renfield Street, flames are much less visible in the building.

    There is a lot of smoke in the air and pockets of fire remain.

    Firefighters on height appliances are now above the roof spraying water inside and dampening down the fires that can still be seen in the building.

    The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have issued an update on the blaze.

    Firefighters have been on the scene in Glasgow city centre since shortly after they were alerted to the blaze in the ground floor of a "four-storey commercial building" at 15:46.

    A total of 15 appliances, including a high reach vehicle and a water rescue team, alongside “specialist resources” remain on the scene to tackle the fire, a spokesperson said.

    They advised the public to avoid the area if possible and urged local residents to keep their windows closed.

    There have been no reported casualties, they added.

    The first minister has posted on X, external that he is "deeply concerned" about the fire near Glasgow Central Station tonight.

    John Swinney says he is "very grateful to all of the emergency services who are responding".

    "Please continue to follow travel guidance, avoid the area and stay safe," he added.

    Several other businesses based in the building have been posting their reaction on social media.

    Lucky in Love tattooing said they were “devastated” by the scenes, external, adding they were in “complete shock”.

    Nail salon Amore said they were “absolutely heartbroken, external,” describing the situation as “horrendous”.

    The owner of Willow hair salon posted on Instagram, external that her business had been “burned to the ground”.

  19. Coffee shop 'destroyed' by firepublished at 22:28 GMT 8 March

    A coffee shop in the building at the centre of the fire in Glasgow has been “destroyed,” its owners have said.

    Sexy Coffee said they were “devastated” their branch on Union Street had been wrecked by the blaze.

    In a post on social media, external, they described it as “heartbreaking”.

    However they vowed to “rebuild, revamp the shop and reopen”.
