  1. No trains to and from Scotland's busiest stationpublished at 08:07 GMT 9 March

No trains will run to or from the high-level platforms at Scotland's busiest station today, causing widespread disruption.

Glasgow Central is one of the busiest stations in the UK, with 25 million passengers visits each year.

It is the main station for all services on the west coast mainline to England and also operates services throughout central Scotland.

Nearby Queen Street station operates the most regular services to Edinburgh but most other destinations in the Glasgow area are served from Central.

Avanti West Coast, which operates trains from Glasgow to England, has advised passengers that an amended train service will run to Preston, Carlisle and Motherwell, "enabling customers to connect with trains to Edinburgh and local services to the Glasgow area".

ScotRail warned of substantial disruption to its services and urged passengers to check for the latest information before travelling.

It said no ScotRail services would operate to or from Glasgow Central high level on Monday.

ScotRail services will not call at Glasgow Central low level but will pass through the station to stop at Argyle Street and Anderston.

  2. Building cannot be left in 'limbo' says Glasgow MSPpublished at 08:02 GMT 9 March

"It is important to quickly establish the ownership of the building and the insurance position," says the Labour MSP.

It will then be important to move quickly to establish reconstruction.

Sweeney says: "I think that is going to be absolutely critical.

He tells Radio Scotland Breakfast it can't be left in limbo for years as we have seen with Sauchiehall Street with the ABC and the Art School.

  3. 'It looks like something out of the Blitz'published at 07:56 GMT 9 March

Sweeney wonders whether the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service may need to do more proactive inspections of vape shops.

The Glasgow MSP adds: "I think there are significant concerns that essentially Scotland's busiest station can be wiped out by this kind of situation."

He says this major fire has opened up a blind spot in the consideration about these retail units.

A salon, cafe and the famous Blue Lagoon fish and chip shop have been completely wiped out, Sweeney says.

"The building is a gutted shell, it looks like something out of the Blitz."

  4. MSP raises concerns about proximity of vape shops to national infrastructurepublished at 07:52 GMT 9 March

    Paul Sweeney

Glasgow MSP Paul Sweeney tells Radio Scotland Breakfast everyone who he was standing with last night were "sickened" by the fire.

The Labour MSP says: "To see the entire building completely consumed in an inferno was truly shocking.

"I think it's just raised serious questions aboout the proximity of critical national infrastructure to these vape shops."

Glasgow Central Station - the busiest in Scotland and one of the busiest in the UK - is closed for the whole of today but after that it is not yet clear.

Looking at the destruction around it, you would imagine it could be closed for quite a while.

    There will be significant disruption.

This station is very busy, with 25 million passenger visits a year, and it is completely closed.

The high-level platforms are closed and the low-level trains can pass through but won't stop at Glasgow Central.

There is also significant disruption to Glasgow city centre, with an exclusion zone around the station causing congestion.

Firefighters with the burnt-out building behind them

As the light starts to come up on Glasgow city centre this morning, we can see the wreckage of the building on Union Street that was devastated by fire.

There is still smoke pouring out of it and there is still water being pumped into it, which gives the impression that this is not yet a dampening-down operation.

There is still firefighting going on, about 16 hours after the blaze started.

Scottish Fire and Rescue says there are still nine fire engines and three high-reach appliance at the scene.

We asked if the fire was under control yet and they said they couldn't say.

There is still a significant amount of activity going on and the blackened carcass of that building where it started is now becoming visible.

It says: "The response to the commercial building fire on Union Street, Glasgow, has now been reduced, with nine fire appliances and three high-reach vehicles remaining at the scene.

"Members of the public are still advised to avoid the area where possible, and nearby residents should keep windows closed as a precaution."

It adds: "We were alerted at 3.46pm on Sunday, 8 March, to reports of a fire affecting the ground floor of a four-storey commercial building on Union Street, Glasgow.

"At its height, 18 appliances and specialist resources were mobilised. The incident has since been scaled back and nine appliances, including three high-reach vehicles, remain in attendance.

Our reporter Katie Hunter is at Union Corner in Glasgow city centre and she says she can still see smoke rising from the building.

They have been there since 4pm yesterday afternoon.

She says the fire started in a vape shop but it quickly escalated, with about 60 firefighters there at the height of the blaze.

    Reporting from Glasgow city centre

Glasgow Central Station is the busiest railway station in Scotland - and the fourth busiest in the UK, outside the main London stations.

There are 25 million passenger visits each year.

It will remain closed all day today, with no trains running at all.

It will have an impact across the ScotRail network and on trains to England.

There is also an exclusion zone for about a block in every direction around Central Station. That's going to cause problems.

  13. 'There were audible gasps when the dome caved in'published at 06:47 GMT 9 March

    James Cheyne
    Reporting from Glasgow city centre

I can see the blackened skeleton of the building at street level and the dome above it.

There were audible gasps among the people gathered here last night when that dome caved in.

It was about 3.45pm on Sunday when the emergency services were called.

There was dark black smoke billowing from a narrow doorway on Union Street.

Firefighters fought the fire in the afternoon but it was later in the evening that it became apparent how significant the blaze was.

The flames that were still visible blazing inside the windows late last night have now gone.

By the early hours of this morning it was just grey smoke pouring out of the building.

There are still two large hoses above us pouring water into the building on Union Street, at the side of Glasgow Central Station.

There are at least 10 fire engines still on the scene.

The firefighters have everything under control but it is still an active effort, 15 hours after the fire broke out.

  15. Glasgow Central Station closed all daypublished at 06:38 GMT 9 March

Travel disruption is expected to last throughout the day after a fire broke out near Glasgow Central railway station.

National Rail says the station will remain closed with "no estimate on when the station will reopen" following the blaze at a vape shop in Union Street.

"We expect disruption to continue on routes to/from/through Glasgow Central until at least the end of the day," it said in a statement.

No trains will run to or from the high-level platforms at Scotland's busiest station, while trains that run through the low-level platforms will not call at Glasgow Central.

Avanti West Coast advised passengers an amended train service will run to Preston, Carlisle and Motherwell, "enabling customers to connect with trains to Edinburgh and local services to the Glasgow area".

ScotRail warned of substantial disruption to its services and urged passengers to check for the latest information before travelling.

TransPennine Express says its services will not run between Glasgow Central and Liverpool Lime Street or Manchester Airport on Monday, while trains between Edinburgh and Newcastle/Manchester Airport will be subject to delays and cancellations in both directions.
