  3. "We're not hiding anymore."published at 20:38 GMT 13 November 2025

Earlier today, Sara Cox picked up on Trevor Nelson when he referred to women over 50 as 'women of a certain age'. Lots of people use this kind of wording and Sara wants to change that.

And many agree - there have been texts in all day from women over 50 who felt seen by what she said, and are inspired by Sara and her amazing challenge.

While speaking to Jo Whiley at the finish line, she called out to the crowd who came out to support for back up...

Sara: You know the whole 'women of a certain age' thing? We're not having it, are we women?

    Crowd: No!

Sara: We're not 'gals', we're not 'women of a certain age'.

Jo: It's such a rubbish phrase.

Sara: Yeah. We're not hiding anymore. We're over 50, and we're not having it!

    Crowd: No!

Sara: All the men are looking confused!

  4. "I’ve been in bits listening all week!"published at 20:28 GMT 13 November 2025

Some final bits of love from the Radio 2 listeners, whose endless support has kept Sara moving through her longest day of the challenge...

I have to admit, I’m a self-confessed cynic, but everything that Sara is doing has made me donate today. Wishing wings to your heels Sara, take care

I’m a social worker and I work in children’s safeguarding, and I just wanted to mention how important the services are that are funded by Children in Need. It makes our jobs that little bit easier having services to support vulnerable families of which there are many. I’ve been in bits listening all week and I’m so proud of Sara. Her show gets me through my drive home after a hard day at work.

I don’t know how Sara’s doing it, she’s superhuman. What a hero! Constantly got my eye on Instagram in work this week watching the updates. I’ve donated and I love that I’m just a small part of a huge Radio 2 family who are supporting her all these miles. What a cause, what a woman. Go Sara!

  5. "I've never known pain like it."published at 20:19 GMT 13 November 2025

Sara spoke to Jo Whiley just as she concluded her fourth marathon in four days!

"I do have a correction to make, I said yesterday was one of the hardest days of my life and I think I need to update you. That was so tough. OH MY GOSH that was so tough, I don't know how I did it. And thanks to everybody who came out and I'm so sorry - at one point it hurt to put my thumbs up so I was just charging ahead, and I could feel the love from people and I couldn't even glance to them because it would change how I moved and everything hurt."

Sara explained what it was like trying to combat the intense pain and hilly terrain.

"You can't get any rhythm cos it hurts going down, so I'm walking backwards going downhill, and then just trying to stride up. And my shins were killing me, I've never known pain like it and I was just trying to hold onto the anger of whoever came up with the route and using that to push through."

To put how she's feeling now in four words?

    "I am absolutely beat."

A call came from the red telephone box

Sara was surprised when the telephone box she was leaning against, when on the air with Trevor Nelson, began to ring! It turned out to be a call from India, where her family are currently away on a trip. Sara had the chance to catchup with her mum, who had some apt words of encouragement to lift her spirits and to send her daughter some love.

A special version of Sara's jingle

Schoolkids in Kirby Malzeard gave Sara a brilliant chant inspired by her radio show's jingle! They performed it for Spoony over the phone and he thought it was so good, they should use it instead of Sara's actual jingle.

  7. "Quitting is not an option."published at 19:56 GMT 13 November 2025

    Sara Cox
BBC Radio 2's Great Northern Marathon Woman

I don't even want to think about tomorrow, I just can't even think about it babe I'm in so much pain. My legs, my calves are so swollen, the paramedic was taking my pulse at the last stop a couple of miles away because I was just running along the street going, "No pain, no pain, no pain", just trying to do mind over matter.

They asked me if I wanted to carry on a couple of miles back and I'm like, "Yes! Let's finish it."

It's all so sore but that amount, 3 and a half million, is just incredible.

Quitting is absolutely not an option.

Overwhelmed, Sara told Jo: "Everything hurts, but that is so much money for Children in Need, that's going to make a massive difference to so many kids who need it and their families. Thank you so much, if you've given any amount it makes a huge difference."

Graphic saying: Total raised so far - £3,587,894

We just had a lovely voice note from listener Kay - is someone chopping onions..?

    Quote Message

Hey Sara, can you feel the love? The whole nation is behind you. In the morning I struggled to put my make up on, I had tears running down my face listening to you on the start line. Feel the love, let the love give you the wings you need to get to the end. Big love and hugs.

Rumour has it Jeremy’s running in a leather jacket!

  18. Jeremy Vine makes it to Sarapublished at 18:34 GMT 13 November 2025

Jeremy Vine has made it to run alongside his Radio 2 bestie Sara Cox as she pushes towards the end of Day 4 of her Great Northern Marathon Challenge.

He left his show six minutes early to get a train from London King's Cross up to York, and despite almost missing the train due to looking at the wrong sign board, he got there and managed to get a taxi over from York towards Ripon.

Despite a bit of a jump-scare - as he literally jumped out of the bushes to surprise Sara mid-run - Jeremy confirmed that through it all Sara is still in great spirits, and "they'll always have that hedge."

Jeremy has let Sara know how proud her Radio 2 family of DJs and listeners are of her. "We've got our kid out here who's absolutely storming it, and she knows we're all rooting for her."

Jeremy also acknowledged that this is the really tough point: "It's not easy this bit, this point in the week. It's like a petrol tank... You are on 100 and then you're down to 7, and you're running on 7. You're running on fumes."

Jeremy continues to run alongside Sara for this stretch, but he did admit he wasn't sure how he was the one who'd ended up getting a massage on his show earlier while Sara was running along!
