Day 2 is Sara's "highest day".

She's just set off along the cobbled streets of Hexham, with some bruisingly relentless climbs into The North Pennines coming up.

After battling the arduous ascent of Bale Hill, around 6 weary miles of wilderness awaits…

Entering County Durham she'll pass through Stanhope and Frosterly, running alongside the River Wear, and reach Wolsingham, where she can finally rest her blistered feet after completing her second full marathon.

But in the knowledge that she’s still not at the halfway point...

  11. And we're off for Day 2!published at 08:23 GMT 11 November 2025

Sara Cox kicking off Day 2

The second day of Sara Cox's Great Northern Marathon Challenge has officially kicked off - and she joined Scott Mills on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show before setting off from Hexham to Wolsingham.

As Scott put it, “she has to do it all again!”

Helping her get started were horn-player Charlotte and town crier Helen, who gave her a proper send-off.

"Everybody's asking 'how I'm feeling what's hurting, how I'm doing'. I'm nervous, basically, but then as we get closer and closer to the start line, the good old adrenaline kicks in and I just start to get a bit more cheery and a bit more sort of buzzing," Sara told Scott before setting off.

"And there's loads of people already here. They've all got their hoods up because the drizzle has started. And so just people making the effort to come out and say hello gives me a right boost. There's so many dogs. many dogs."

Plus, as Sara says, "it was lovely listening to all the messages."

It's all for a good cause and Sara's powering through for day two!

    Good luck, Sara!

    Sara Cox
BBC Radio 2's Great Northern Marathon Woman

Sara spoke to Jo Whiley last night about her worries for today...

I’m a bit nervous about how I’ll feel in the morning, because obviously it’s going to be day 2 and I was completely fresh this morning. And tomorrow the weather forecast doesn’t look great, and we are going through really remote - beautiful, but remote - countryside and up over the moors. So I am a bit apprehensive but feeling good. And everyone’s been amazing. We’ve raised so much Jo!

  15. Where is Sara this morning?published at 07:46 GMT 11 November 2025

After yesterday's triumphant finish in Hexham, Northumberland, Sara's challenge restarts in the market town this morning.
