The Big Read in West Yorkshire
The BBC's Big Read
The BBC's Big Read was the country’s biggest ever celebration of the magic of reading. For most of 2003 millions of people across the UK decided which was the country's best-loved book.

The best-loved book turned out to be Lord of the Rings but our very own Brontë sisters, Charlotte and Emily, both reached the top 21 with Charlotte's Jane Eyre just scraping into the Top Ten by a whisker.

Bradford's great man of letters, J.B. Priestley, did not get a mention. Perhaps his books are no longer read.

Thirty years ago West Yorkshire writers like Stan (A Kind of Loving) Barstow and John (Room at the Top) Braine would almost certainly have featured on such a list.

We believe West Yorkshire is a hot-bed of good writing. Joolz Denby, Yunis Alam, Sophie Hannah, David Peace and Robert Craig are amongst the authors we have featured on this site, and we know we've only touched the tip of the iceberg.

Tell us which authors you think should be included in West Yorkshire's very own Big Read by emailing us at:westyorkshire@bbc.co.uk

Many of the most popular books are also great films and during 2004 we will be asking you for your comments on film adaptations, good or bad and starting with Girl with a Pearl Earing in February the National Museum of Film, Photography and Television, in association with Bradford Libraries, have a new regular strand of films based on great books and lots of more. Watch out for further details!
