Serbian
playwright Ugljea ajtinac focuses on a group of young
Serbians who get together to celebrate the return of one of their
friends who has been away in Huddersfield for ten years. The
gathering provides the catalyst for a searching re-assessment of
their lives, so different from normal expectations.
As they struggle to accept their lot, their stories parallel those
of their country, ravaged by over a decade of political unrest and
war
Ugljea had the idea for 'Huddersfield' in 2000 after a visit
to the West Yorkshire town to see his play, The Propsmaster, performed
at the Festival of Contemporary European Plays.

West
Yorkshire Playhouse Literary Manager Alex Chisholm is directing
this hard-hitting Serbian drama in Belgrave. He says: "Huddersfield
has become one of the most successful new plays premiered at the
Playhouse, receiving interest from around the world including a
possible American production.
"I am excited and proud to be asked to direct this play in
Serbian in Serbia and to be bringing a bit of West Yorkshire to
Eastern Europe!"
As part of the Yugoslav Drama Theatre production, Serbian audiences
will catch glimpses of the West Yorkshire town of Huddersfield as
part of stage screen projections.
