This
360 shows the the visitor centre and a busy canal junction
at at Tunnel End in Marsden. Look closely and you can
see a train passing, heading into the rail tunnel running
alongside the canal tunnel.
Standedge
Tunnel is the longest, highest and deepest canal in
Britain. The tunnel takes the canal under the high Pennine
spine of Northern England between Marsden in the Colne
Valley and Diggle in Saddleworth.
Before the canal tunnel near Huddersfield was complete
all boats transferred their cargo to packhorses. The
first boat passed through on December 10th 1810, after
restoration the tunnel re-opened in 2001.
