The historical Founder's Room in the George Hotel in
Huddersfield...where Rugby League began!
The
George Hotel is famous for being the birthplace of rugby
league in 1895. Twenty-one union teams formed the breakaway
Northern Rugby Union (later the Rugby League). Stockport
was also accepted into the league via telephone to the
hotel. The inaugural competition they played for was
called the Northern Rugby Football League.
