MP praises new Tropicana design
John Penrose MP
Mr Penrose won the seat at the May general election
Weston-super-Mare's Conservative MP, John Penrose, has welcomed news that a private contractor has been chosen to develop the town's Tropicana site.

On Thursday North Somerset Council voted in favour of developer Henry Boot's plans to build a leisure pool and a cinema on the beachfront site.

"It is vital that the development respects the wishes of local people," said Mr Penrose.

"I'm delighted the proposal includes a pool and leisure facilities."

Private funding

The MP added: "I have written to Henry Boot Ltd asking for an early meeting.

"I want to ensure that local residents are kept fully informed of progress and that the pool doesn't get removed from the plans at any stage during the forthcoming planning process."

"I will do everything I can to ensure the development is completed properly and on time."

"The best thing about this scheme is that it is privately funded."

Dwindling visitor numbers in the 1990s saw the council vote to close the original Tropicana in 2000.

In 2004, developers Mace pulled out of £23m plans to rebuild it, and there were fears it would become a derelict eyesore.
