Future Jobs in South East Wales
More
than 1.2 million people live in the South East Wales area.
Most of its economic success has come from attracting inward
investment along the M4 corridor, while the growth of Cardiff
as a European Capital City has also helped. However, some
parts of the South Wales valleys remain deprived.
Main
sectors of employment in South East Wales
These
are the industries which employ the most people in South East
Wales.

Five
Year Prospect
These
are the industries that are likely to have greatest jobs growth
over the next 5 years:
1.
‘Other’ (mainly public) services
10,000 new jobs predicted. Jobs growth here is mainly down
to increased numbers of people being employed in public health
services and in education.
2.
‘Other’ manufacturing
2,500 new jobs predicted. Manufacturing has a strong tradition
in South East Wales. This sector includes industries like
recycling which are growing because of concerns about waste
disposal and the environment. Also included here is the manufacture
of items as diverse as office furniture, toys, sports goods
and jewellery.
3.

1,400 new jobs predicted. South East Wales is by far the strongest
region in terms of financial and business services in Wales.
It includes banking, insurance and selling property.
4.
Engineering
1,000 new jobs predicted.
This includes the manufacture of machinery which is used by
other companies in the production process. Among the items
produced are electrical and optical equipment such as communication
equipment, medical equipment and optical precision instruments.
