Sheff Wed 0-2 Gillingham

Gillingham recorded their first-ever win at Hillsborough, sending struggling Sheffield Wednesday crashing to another defeat.

Wednesday had only themselves to blame, dominating for long spells but failing to convert a host of chances.

They were given a lesson in finishing by the visitors.

New loan signings Garry Monk and Allan Johnston hardly had time to meet their team-mates when Gillingham took the lead.

Veteran Rod Wallace popped up at the far post to meet a Marlon King cross and steer the ball home after just five minutes.

Wallace almost doubled his tally but his 20-yard shot was saved by Kevin Pressman.

Inability

Wednesday's Shefki Kuqi headed a good chance wide and at the other end, Wallace had a fierce left-footed shot blocked by Paul McLaren.

The Owls' best chance fell to Tony Crane on 20 minutes when Tony Crane but his powerful far-post header from Matthew Hamshaw's corner was parried for a corner by Jason Brown.

Trond Soltvedt had a fierce shot well saved by Brown, who also beat out a determined effort by Green.

Gerald Sibon and Kuqi both hit the woodwork before Sibon headed over the crossbar from close range.

Wednesday's inability to turn chances into goals continued after the restart and Kuqi somehow managed to head wide from the centre of the penalty area.

No impact

Wednesday piled on the pressure, and a header by Sibon was comfortably saved by Brown.

Gillingham hardly had a look in but after 74 minutes a rare break saw a good cross by Paul Shaw headed goalwards by King.

Pressman kept the ball out but it rebounded to Paul Smith who knocked the ball home from close range.

The goal spurred Wednesday boss Turner to bring on his third new loan signing, striker Adam Proudlock for Sibon.

But he could not make any impact and Wednesday ended the game in familiar fashion, Johnston and McClaren both shooting wide.

Gillingham: Brown, Nosworthy, Ashby, Hope, Leon Johnson, Saunders, Smith, Hessenthaler, Shaw, King, Wallace. Subs: Bartram, Ipoua, Spiller, Perpetuini, Southall.
