Dalziel proud of players
Gordon Dalziel was delighted with Ayr's 12,000 fans
Gordon Dalziel pronounced himself proud of his Ayr United players, despite suffering a 4-0 CIS Insurance Cup final defeat at the hands of Rangers.
And the Ayr boss said that they would return six days later and give an equally good account of themselves against the other half of Scotland's Old Firm. The First Division side will be hoping that they can replicate their first-half performance over the whole 90 minutes when they will again start an underdogs, this time against Celtic in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup. Dalziel said: "I am very proud of my players today.
"I don't think that we deserved to lose the game 4-0.
"Rangers got their goals at the right time. "I had actually turned to the bench and said 'if we can just go in here 0-0...' when they scored theif first. "It was a big turning point, three minutes to go to half-time. "But there is nothing to be ashamed of. "Everybody has done us proud and we're back here next week and hopefully 12,000 fans will be back here to see us against Celtic."
Ayr captain John Hughes said: "I hope our fans were proud of us. "We gave our best, but it wasn't good enough." Now Ayr must gather their thoughts and concentrate on their second chance of Glasgow giantkilling, against Scottish Premier League leaders and reigning champions Celtic. "We have got to take positives out of this game for next weekend," added Hughes.
