It will be very interesting to hear from Coco Gauff about what went wrong today when she speaks in her news conference.

Five double faults, 26 unforced errors, just three winners.

A total disaster from start to finish for the French Open champion.

Coco Gauff was never in the contest.

All credit to Elina Svitolina on a solid performance and a victory which lifts her back into the world's top 10.

She is deservedly into her first major semi-final since 2023, where she will face world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

But the manner of Gauff's loss will likely gain as much attention.

The American is shown smashing her racquet to pieces as she walks off down the tunnel to the locker room.

    *Gauff 1-6 2-5 Svitolina

Given the way Coco Gauff has been serving in this match, Elina Svitolina is quite realistically just four points from victory as the third seed steps up to try to stay in this.

Svitolina edges two points away... and now she'll have two match points!

Can Elina Svitolina keep a cool head here as she edges towards a significant first Australian Open semi-final?

That forehand winner suggests she will! Luck is on her side on the following point as a forehand bounces on the net and Coco Gauff can't get it back.

Svitolina is one game away from a huge win here!

This is some of the best tennis I have ever seen Svitolina play.

She is laughing, she has got a big smile on her face. It's not mocking, she is just appreciating the level she is bringing.

She has not crumbled. She has got everything to smile about.

Another loss of serve here for Coco Gauff really would be game over.

The crowd are getting behind the third seed, hoping to help her get a bit closer to her best level, and the American gets a rare straightforward hold to stay in contention.

Somebody has done their homework on Gauff because this tactic of going straight up the middle has paid off.

Gauff has ended up with a lot of unforced errors off that forehand, with Svitolina not having to do too much.

Coco Gauff slaps her forehand after she sends a forehand long at 15-15, just as she was beginning to feel like she was building some momentum.

Elina Svitolina has remained steady throughout, despite the inconsistency of her misfiring opponent, and finds a couple of first serves to close in on a first Australian Open semi-final.

Gauff is looking very much like a youngster here and it's almost immature the way she is handling the situation.

You can understand it though - there is so much pressure on her shoulders every time she walks on to court.

She needs to try to get her composure back and settle her mind - it is racing at the moment.

  11. Gauff saves break point to holdpublished at 08:52 GMT 27 January

    Gauff 1-6 1-3 Svitolina*

Coco Gauff recovers to 30-30 only for Elina Svitolina to wallop a huge forehand out of reach for break point.

That's better, though! Gauff digs deep to reach game point, and lets out a big cheer as she holds serve for the very first time tonight.

    Positive signs...

    *Gauff 1-6 0-3 Svitolina

There remains no hint that Coco Gauff is going to offer any resistance here.

The third seed looks down and out as she falls 0-15 and then 0-30 down on serve.

One of the stunning things of this is the pace of the match.

Usually, Coco Gauff's wheels are one of her biggest strengths and she is able to scramble back balls. There are balls early in the rallies that she hasn't even got close to.

    Is Gauff 100% well?

    *Gauff 1-6 0-3 Svitolina

Incredible. Elina Svitolina smashes in an ace to follow up her break to love with a hold of serve to love.

That makes it 10 points in a row for the 12th seed - and more importantly a commanding 3-0 lead in set two, against an opponent who just cannot hold serve today.

Yet more break points for Coco Gauff to face as she slumps to a 0-40 deficit.

Gauff can only stare into space as she concedes the first, as her Australian Open campaign threatens to unravel alarmingly fast.

There's no sign just yet that Coco Gauff has managed to reset after that frustrating first set.

The body language hasn't exactly improved as she produces a couple more unforced errors to let Elina Svitolina get up and running in set two.

[After watching Gauff] I often leave with a sense of admiration.

She doesn't have to find this sense of clarity within her, she can wrestle through the storm.

I think it was at a match in Rome last year where she was pretty much in tears at moments in the match, yet she came through deep in the deciding set.

I don't see in many players on the tour who can be in such a spin and come through on the scoreboard like Gauff can. It is an amazing ability she has, let alone at the age of 21.

I would not write her off at all in this.

The American resumes having made five double faults and 14 unforced errors, in comparison to just two winners in the first set.

She failed to win a service game, winning just 36% of points behind her first serve and only one of 10 points on her second serve.

Svitolina is not messing about here.

The one thing she has been able to do is take full advantage of a slightly under-par opponent and she is stamping her authority.

Coco Gauff is almost below 50% of her first serves landed. That puts her in jeopardy.

No service holds for the American in the opening set.
