Emilio Nava was also forced to play out five sets in his first-round match against France's Kyrian Jacquet.

The American went two sets up against his unseeded opponent, struggled as his energy levels dropped off in the third and fourth sets, but fought through the deciding set to claim a 6-2 7-5 6-7 (5-7) 4-6 7-6 (10-6) victory.

Something is telling me this second-round encounter might just go to five sets as well...

It won't be long until Cameron Norrie steps on court now because Jelena Ostapenko and Hsieh Su-wei have taken the second set to wrap up their first-round match on court seven.

The Brit showed great resilience to see off Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi in five sets in his opening match at the Australian Open.

Norrie is seeded at a Grand Slam for the first time since the 2024 French Open at Melbourne Park.

Hoping for a deep run at the first slam of the year, he battled back to beat Bonzi 6-0 6-7 (2-7) 4-6 6-3 6-4 and set up today's meeting with American Emilio Nava.

They are 7-5 5-2 up against Olivia Gadecki and Desirae Krawczyk.

    Alcaraz 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 6-2 Hanfmann

"I don't know what's coming tomorrow, I need to talk to my team. I don't know if I am going to practice, I will probably practice a little because I want to be better in the next round but the golf courses are waiting for me and I know that."

On who he played golf with recently: "I always like to play with Roger [Federer].

Asked how good Federer's game is, Alcaraz said: "As beautiful as the tennis. I am not surprised neither. It's unbelievable. Everything he does in style, really beautiful. More from Carlos Alcaraz on facing lower-ranked players: "A lot of people only watch the rankings. I'm number one and playing against the number 100. People think it's going to be an easy match but it isn't to be honest. With every match is different, the style of the players is different. Some players suit quite well to yours [style] and you feel really comfortable and then there are others you feel really uncomfortable, which probably Yannick has a style that I'm not really comfortable with.

"The conditions were breezy, really hot. I thought it was going to be cloudy but the sun came out- thank God! Every condition is different so you have to get used to it, but it's never easy."

"The ball was coming as a bomb. Forehand, backhand, serves. So I had to be ready for those. Really happy that I got through a difficult first set. Felt better with my shots and played much better so happy to have played a really good level at the end of the match and get through to another round."
