Novak Djokovic had three full days of rest before today's quarter-final against Lorenzo Musetti, after fourth-round opponent Jakub Mensik pulled out injured.

With conserving energy likely to be a key factor for the 38-year-old and his chances of lifting the trophy on Sunday, he escapes from his quarter-final after just over two hours.

But he will be as aware as anyone that he will need to be much, much better to have any hope of winning a record-breaking 25th major here.

He awaits defending champion Jannik Sinner or American Ben Shelton in the last four.

There can be little doubt that, had that match continued in the way it was heading, Novak Djokovic was heading out of the Australian Open.

Lorenzo Musetti was excellent for two sets against an out-of-sorts Djokovic but his tournament is brought to a disappointing end with that injury to his right leg.

That problem is not something Lorenzo Musetti believes he can recover from.

After double-faulting, the Italian walks to the net to shake hands with Novak Djokovic.

That is gutting at two sets to love up.

All eyes are on Lorenzo Musetti and whether this physical discomfort he appears to be in is something he can shake off.

The early signs are not great as he falls 0-30 down on serve, and he double-faults for 15-40.

Lorenzo Musetti is back on his feet and out to resume the third set, but he doesn't appear to be moving too well. He winces as he chases a shot along the baseline.

The Italian is able to follow Djokovic to 30-30, but the Serb digs out a backhand for game point before popping away a forehand to take control of this must-win set.

Now it's Lorenzo Musetti who has called for the trainer, after appearing to pull up with an issue at the end of that game.

The Italian is in a brilliant position here but he doesn't look too happy as this problem is investigated at the change of ends. The trainer is currently massaging the top of Musetti's right leg.

Novak Djokovic, meanwhile, is busy stretching out his legs at the other side of the court.

Novak Djokovic looks like he's struggling physically and he starts stretching in between each point.

But that's not stopped him from getting an early break!

Lorenzo Musetti misses, double faults and then misses again. And Djokovic makes the most of the opportunity, sending down a backhand winner on the first of three break points.

    Is the comeback on?!

    Better from Novak Djokovic.

He gets himself through his service game relatively comfortably, wrapping it up by dragging Lorenzo Musetti out wide with the first serve and then slamming home a backhand winner into the empty court left behind.

Novak Djokovic is back up and ready to go.

We all know by now not to rule him out - even when he is injured - but it's hard to see a way back for him against Lorenzo Musetti.

The Italian picks up where he left off with a stunning backhand winner and that sets him on his way to a hold to 15.

Novak Djokovic called for the trainer at the end of that set and he's now having a medical time-out.

The fourth seed looks to be in a serious bit of pain as he receives some treatment to his foot, which has been pretty heavily bandaged.

It's a two-set lead for Musetti and it's a long, long way back for Djokovic from here.

Lorenzo Musetti moves within three points of the set with a forehand winner, but Novak Djokovic refocuses and turns the game in his favour with an ace.

Djokovic appears to have got away with one as Musetti misses at the net, but the former world number one informs the umpire that he touched the ball and the score is corrected to 30-30.

Incredible sportsmanship, especially considering the situation. Nobody else appeared to suspect anything there.

What will it mean for the outcome of this set? Musetti reaches deuce.

No more room for error from Novak Djokovic now. Any further dips would surely leave him staring at a two-set deficit.

The bizarre lapses continue to come as he drops a forehand into the net when positioned up the court, but a couple of accurate first serves get the Serb over the line.

    Djokovic 4-6 2-3 Musetti*

A break point opportunity here for Novak Djokovic, but once again Lorenzo Musetti does brilliantly under intense pressure to keep getting the ball back long enough to see his opponent falter - as he has done throughout this match so far.

Deuce. This suddenly feels like a really key game.

Lorenzo Musetti is patient as he draws another miss from Novak Djokovic for 15-15, before slicing in a delightful backhand drop shot and shaking his fist in celebration as he laps up the crowd's appreciation.

The Italian faces a couple of key points here though after missing for 30-30, as he seeks to remain on course for a two-set lead.

A grimace from Lorenzo Musetti this time. The Italian knows he had an opportunity there to level at 30-30 and apply more pressure to the Novak Djokovic serve.

He might still get the opportunity as he drives another superb one-handed backhand down the line... Nope, Djokovic lands a forehand to stay in touch.
