While this is *clearly* not ideal for Ireland...there is a certain fascination in trying to work out how exactly they are going to line out for the start of the second half.

I think we're beyond even Peter O'Mahony on the wing against Italy in 2013 territory here.

Also, Willemse pulling out the Troy Parrott celebration in the very stadium where he scored twice against Portugal is a brave move.

Absolutely farcical, and such a shame. What could have been a belter is now an inevitable march to SA's first win in Dublin. Farrell better be tearing into them in the changing rooms.

    Ciaran, St Andrews

Not disputing any of the Irish offences but you have to wonder how different the game would have been if the ref had binned Mngomezulu for his head high shoulder charge. Shocked that wasn’t a minimum yellow

    Dave, Hemel Hempstead

As a neutral...oooft. What a half! Ireland showing how to manage play when under the cosh and a man or two down...Ireland to win with a drop goal in the 2nd half. Amazing.

With all the carnage, it's kind of been lost how good Damian Willemse's finish was in the opening few minutes.

The atmosphere is brilliant and the crowd are willing Ireland on. However, they haven't been able to cope with South Africa's physicality so far.

Crazy play by the Irish, such ill-discipline

    Nige, London

Ireland genuinely lucky not to be playing with 10 at the start of the second half. Ryan should be a straight red and penalty try is another yellow. Handling pressure worse than Scotland do!

    Chris, Edinburgh

This South Africa team are the equal of the great AC Milan team of the 1990s

If Ireland's players had hidden a bit better in this green mist they may have more than 12 players on the pitch.

This is absurd. South Africa best in the world at the scum so let’s get every opposition player in the bin. It’s a farce.

    Chris, London

It is obvious that the ref can't handle the occasion.

    Johan, Cardiff

I don't know whether this is the mother of all brain fades by Ireland, or some of the worst officiating I have ever heard. A little from column A, a little from column B?

    Alex, Witham

Matthew Carley, South Africa's best player

An utterly insane first half. How Ireland are still in this is incredible.

An entrance befitting a big game like this. It's lived up to the billing so far.

    Pure drama.

    Chaos!

    Margaret, Bedford

I really don't see Prendergast as the long-term successor to Sexton. For all the things he does well, his weaknesses are too big to carry at international level.

    Ryan, Sully

Has the 20-minute red card created a situation where players and/or coaches think they can inflict damage on the opposition and then just ride out the 20 minutes?

    Paddy, Chelmsford

If the second yellow in the Wales game was justified, then why not a yellow for the South Africa 10? The inconsistency is killing the game.

So, just to recap in case you care catching up:

    Four tries.

    Two disallowed tries.

    Four yellow cards.

    One upgraded to red.

Two non-yellow cards that easily could have been given.

    Ireland down to 12 players.

    Chaos.

Try - Ireland 7-19 South Africapublished at 44 mins

    Penalty try

Matthew Carley had run out of options and I've never seen Irish players run off the pitch as quickly in case any more cards are out

Carley decides no other action needs to be taken, but the damage is done.

    NOT ANOTHER ONE!

Andrew Porter is now in the bin as the scrum crumbled. That's now 12 white shirts on the pitch.

Ireland are even beyond rugby league now, it's almost down to rugby sevens!

Paddy McCarthy is on for Josh van der Flier.

For all the various opinions on Prendergast and Crowley this month, don't think anyone's solution was the pair of them sat beside each other in the sin bin.

Ireland's discipline so far off what is required to beat the best side in the world.

South Africa now have the penalty advantage at the maul...and that becomes an actual penalty.

The Boks are going to for the scrum.

Rassie Erasmus brings on props Gerhard Steenkamp and Wilco Louw as the Boks look to pile the pressure on.

    WHAT IS GOING ON?!

Jack Crowley is now sent to the bin for knocking the ball out of Reinach's hands in the ruck.

Now South Africa have the penalty and it's into the 22.

Ireland are back to 13, as Cian Prendergast comes on as Crowley jogs off.

We're into the final 60 seconds of the half and Reinach knocks the ball on.

Ireland will look to run the clock down in the final seconds of the half.

Cian Prendergast is going to come on for Ryan, whose 20 minute red card is almost over.
