Summary

    Glasgow Warriors 7-5 Edinburgh

Worth remembering at this point last year, Glasgow had a 21-0 lead while Edinburgh were down to 14 men.

    The difference a year makes.

  2. try

Try Glasgow Warriors 7-5 EDINBURGHpublished at 28 mins

    Dylan Richardson

This is better from the visitors. They've managed to get down into Glasgow's 22m and have a throw.

Ewan Ashman's dart is good, and the shove from Edinburgh is enormous. Warriors players split like skittles and Richardson spearheads through!

Cammy Scott skews his kick wide, so it's not level.

    Glasgow Warriors 7-0 Edinburgh

Another Edinburgh scrum, another move that gets the ball into the hands of Duhan van der Merwe - but Glasgow read it well and the big man is wrapped up in the midfield.

Edinburgh have to boot the ball away as a result. It's not working so far.

    Glasgow Warriors 7-0 Edinburgh

Edinburgh are back defending in their own 22m, but Dylan Richardson forces a penalty at the breakdown.

That was one-way traffic until the openside stepped in.

Edinburgh choose to scrum and get the ball into the hands of Duhan van der Merwe for the first time as they launch an attack from deep - but he's wrapped up quickly.

Edinburgh are competing hard at the breakdown, but they really have failed to exist as an attacking force. They have had no ball to work with.

Glasgow have the upper hand and if they can score next, it will begin to feel like a rerun of last year's Hampden meeting between these sides.

  6. Postpublished at 17 mins

    Glasgow Warriors 7-0 Edinburgh

After a Piers O'Conor kick had put Glasgow under pressure, they've managed to clear their lines, steal the ball back, and march up the pitch.

Edinburgh have the throw in their own 22m, but they're yet to fire a shot really.

Former Scotland captain on Premier Sports

Well worked and great patience from Glasgow after good initial defence from Edinburgh.

Glasgow have dominated the opening exchanges of the match, Edinburgh have hardly had their hands on the ball.

  8. try

Converted Try GLASGOW WARRIORS 7-0 Edinburghpublished at 10 mins

    Matt Fagerson

Again, it's a great counter-maul from Glasgow and the ball briefly goes to deck, but Matt Fagerson scoops it up and Glasgow are rumbling forward again.

They're within a metre, before Matt Fagerson spins out of one tackle and throws himself down at the line.

Adam Hastings knocks it over, and they finally have points to show for their dominance.

  9. Postpublished at 8 mins

    Glasgow Warriors 0-0 Edinburgh

The scrum goes down and it's another penalty to Glasgow. Yet again, they go for the corner.

    A feeling of inevitability here.

  10. Postpublished at 7 mins

    Glasgow Warriors 0-0 Edinburgh

It's a brilliant counter-maul from Edinburgh and Glasgow almost chuck it away.

They keep it in play, but Matt Currie rips it out of Glasgow mitts a few phases later. Unluckily, the ball bounces forward and it's just a knock on.

  11. Postpublished at 5 mins

    Glasgow Warriors 0-0 Edinburgh

Glasgow get their attack purring for the first time, with Sione Tuipulotu's lovely wrap pass putting Kyle Steyn through a gap.

He's brought down on the edge of the 22m, and a few phases later they win a penalty in front of the sticks. They go for the corner...

  12. Postpublished at 2 mins

    Glasgow Warriors 0-0 Edinburgh

Glasgow win the first penalty, but then chuck away the throw and concede one themselves.

Darcy Graham tries to take it quick and is through a gap, but the referee brings it back. He might have been away there.

  13. Kick-offpublished at 0 mins

    Glasgow Warriors 0-0 Edinburgh

Edinburgh emerge first in their white away kit, while Glasgow slowly walk out of the tunnel in their dark blue and black home kit.

No wonder the Warriors look calm. They've won the Cup on the last three occasions. Can they take a step towards number four today?

Lloyd Cross, the Irishman, is in charge. He peeps his whistle, and we're off.

It's a beautiful winter's day and perfect conditions for what we hope will be a Christmas cracker in this first leg of the 1872 Cup.

It's a real family atmosphere at the national stadium and while ticket sales may not quite match last year's 27k at Hampden, it should be an occasion to savour.

Coming off that mighty comeback win over Toulouse, Glasgow are favourites and the home side has tended to have the upper hand in these derbies in recent times. Seven of the last eight meetings have been won by the home side.

Let's just hope Edinburgh have come to play because we know when they get it right they can be a match for anyone.

Edinburgh head coach Sean Everitt tells Premier Sports: "There's definitely a little extra this week, there's always an edge before you play Glasgow.

"There's so much history in this Cup, and with the guys living with each other during international breaks, they've got a lot of banter with each other.

"We can only compare to the last two games away from home. It's how well you start and we haven't started well in both those games. We've got to look at that, and for me it's all about your composure and how you build into it.

"You need to execute the plan with physicality, motivation and a clear head."

  16. Smith plays down last week's win over Toulonpublished at 14:52 GMT 20 December 2025

    Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh (15:00)

Glasgow Warriors head coach Franco Smith speaks to Premier Sports, wearing a fetching pair of tartan trews: "We've won nothing, hopefully we just underpinned that we have a quality group and they're progressing.

"It's the progress we're more interested in. Hopefully we see more of that today.

"They'll be physical around breakdown, they'll carry hard and direct and apply themselves physically. That's what we prepped on, to make sure they don't get under our skin through stupid actions.

"I tried to establish a hybrid game model, and it shouldn't matter if the wind blows or not. I tried to marry the philosophies between northern and southern hemisphere specifically for that."

  17. Last time out at Hampden...published at 14:49 GMT 20 December 2025

    Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh (15:00)

Last season at Hampden, it was a one-sided story.

In the first ever club rugby game at this stadium, Glasgow almost completely outclass their visitors in a five-try performance.

However, two late Boan Venter tries for Edinburgh added some respectability to the scoreline.

"When it mattered, there was only one team in this," is how Tom English described it. Will it be the same again this afternoon?

    Chris Paterson
Former Scotland international on Premier Sports

Two strong sides, with Glasgow named early as a statement of intent on the Tuesday, which told Edinburgh they were coming fully loaded.

Josh McKay will be a miss. Ollie Smith is a talented, international fullback, but McKay set sup a lot of the counter attacks for Glasgow. He's one of the top metre-makers and defender-beaters in the entire league.

The sun's out, it's not windy, it's not rainy, so we'll see a bit of action out wide.

  19. Edinburgh welcome back key playerspublished at 14:39 GMT 20 December 2025

    Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh (15:00)

Seven Scotland internationals return to the Edinburgh starting XV for Saturday's 1872 Cup first leg against Glasgow Warriors at Hampden.

Pierre Schoeman, Grant Gilchrist, Dylan Richardson and club captain Magnus Bradbury are all restored to the forward pack after being rested for last weekend's Champions Cup defeat by Castres.

Hooker Ewan Ashman is promoted from the bench, while Darcy Graham, Duhan van der Merwe and Wes Goosen come into the back three.

Matt Currie and Piers O'Conor continue as the centre partnership, while youngsters Ollie Blyth-Lafferty and Liam McConnell both start.

  20. McKay out, Horne in for hostspublished at 14:36 GMT 20 December 2025

    Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh (15:00)

Glasgow named their squad very early this week - perhaps some mind games from head coach Franco Smith early doors.

They've made just one change and it's enforced - injured fullback Josh McKay drops out, with Jamie Dobie moving out to the wing and Ollie Smith switching from the wing to full-back.

There's a few first-choice players missing - Jamie Bhattie, Huw Jones, and Kyle Rowe are injured, with Johnny Matthews, Sione Vailanu and Euan Ferrie others missing.
