    Benetton 34-7 Dragons

For once, Benetton cough up possession close to the Dragons line as Manuel Zuliani spills the ball forward.

Don't breathe too easily though Dragons fans, from the scrum that follows the hosts get a penalty. Another try looks inevitable but fair play Ryan Woodman, he manages to get underneath a forward drive on his own line and prevent a certain score.

After the chaos that ended the first half, a more mundane period to start the second.

The Dragons win a penalty on halfway and some heavy pressure follows.

It's comes to nothing though as Matthew Screech loses possession, Benetton clear their lines and now it's the hosts back on the attack.

    Benetton 34-7 Dragons

Tinus de Beer gets us back underway but within seconds of the restart, Benetton have an attacking penalty.

Out of interest Dragons fans, Filo Tiatia opted to leave many regular starters out tonight, presumably with an eye on three big weeks coming up.

Thumbs up if you agree with this decision, thumbs down if you think it's a flawed plan...

A reminder of what the result means for both teams after the other Pool 2 games earlier today, with new leaders Newcastle beating Perpignan 26-19 and Johannesburg winning a humdinger against Lyon by 42-33.

It means Dragons kicked off tonight fourth in the table, and nine points off top spot.

Benetton meanwhile, have dropped to second, four points off Newcastle.

    HT: Benetton 34-7 Dragons

Whatever happens tonight, there will be little time for Filo Tiatia and his side to dwell on it.

Next Friday, they host Newcastle Red Bulls and then on 23 January, it's back to the United Rugby Championship and a tough trip to Munster.

Dragons then sign off for the Six Nations on 31 January with the small matter of a trip down the road to face Ospreys.

The evidence of the first 40, there’s no chance they’ll come back from that in the second half.

That’s the poorest I’ve seen the Dragons, from an attacking point of view, yes the scored a try, but the set pieces were failing, the defence had more holes in it than a string vest.

  8. Half-time: Benetton 34-7 Dragonspublished at 18:25 GMT 10 January

To think, a few minutes before the break and Dragons looked right back in this contest. Then they were hit by a whirlwind.

Benetton look capable of attacking from everywhere and for Fiilo Tiatia, the interval has not come quickly enough.

Much was made of the festive form of the Dragons, and it should be remembered Tiatia has opted to rest a host of key players against a strong Benetton side.

But if the Welsh side's fans are still hoping for a first away win in any competition since December 2024, then they are going to need a Christmas miracle. I suspect 10 January may be a little too late to ask for one.

The Dragons look tired, they’re missing too many tackles and to me, there’s no one really putting their hands up and saying ‘follow me’, where you normally think of the Wainwrights to do that and currently there’s no one.

    Umaga try and con

    My word, that is exceptional.

Benetton again break from deep and after some powerful forward carries, winger Louis Lynagh comes off his wing and despite being dragged down short - gets his pass away for Jacob Umaga to score.

The No.10 converts his own try and what a finish to the half that is for Benetton.

    Odogwu try

Low and behold, seconds after the Dragons nearly score and Benetton go the length of the field for a superb team try.

I'm going to be seeing Onisi Ratave runs in my sleep tonight. He again shrugs off would be tacklers before offloading to full back Matt Gallagher, who in turn slips the scoring pass to centre Paulo Odogwu. Jacob Umaga is again just wide with the conversion.

A breathless attacking move and that Rhodri Williams fumble now looks pivotal.

That would’ve been an exceptional try, Rhodri Williams wasn’t maybe expecting that but a lot better from the Dragons.

    So close!

The Dragons look like they are about to instantly respond as Huw Anderson jinks through in midfield. He's dragged down short but offloads to Rhodri Williams - only for the scrum half to spill the ball with the line at his mercy.

    Big chance that.

    Fekitoa try

    Did I say game on?

Scrap that. Again Benetton work the phases and after some powerful carries, centre Malakai Fekitoa rounds off a runaround move in midfield by diving over out wide.

Jacob Umaga can't convert but after seeing his side get back into the game, Dragons coach Filo Tiatia will be disappointed with that.

    Burrows try, De Beer con

    We have hope!

Oli Burrows finds Matthew Screech with his throw, and although Benetton repel the forward drive, hooker Burrows then forces his way over from close range.

Tinus de Beer adds two points and that's a great response from Dragons.

    Game on.

    Benetton 17-0 Dragons

Some respite for the Dragons as Benetton hooker Nicholas Gasperini fumbles forward to halt another attack.

From the scrum that follows Joe Westwood and David Richards combine well in midfield and the visitors win a penalty that Tinus de Beer puts within 10 metres of the try line.

    Here's a chance...

The man who created the first try, scored the second. The Dragons just splinted in front of us, the power from Benetton forward pack, it was lovely recycling.

Again, a few missed tackled, but Benetton are scoring these tries for fun.

It’s a worry from a Dragons perspective, you can’t let the opposition drive you 15-20 meters back like that.

Ironically, Onisi Ratave is one of just three players in the Benetton starting XV without an international cap to his name tonight.

That hasn't stopped him causing chaos so far.

    Ratave try, Umaga con

    Well, this has escalated!

From a scrum penalty, Jacob Umaga pumps his side into Dragons territory and a fearsome rolling maul follows.

The Dragons illegally halt it, but Benetton play the advantage and Onisi Ratave switches in off his left wing to burst over from Umaga's short pass.

The latter again converts and suddenly, the visitors have a mountain to climb.

That try came from the scrum, which the Dragons disintegrated from.

Benetton just made tackle after tackle, and the Dragons just ran out of options.

They’ll be disappointed with that from a Dragons perspective. Izekor ran through a few players but if you miss those important tackles you’ll be punished.
