Dean Garnett told me earlier this week that this fight was easily the biggest of his career, professionally and financially.

You've got to feel for him to lose out like that - he was momentarily hurt but instantly showed signs of recovery in going for the takedown.

You could see the injustice he felt from his furious post-fight reaction.

    Adiguzel v Garnett

So much has changed in MMA since Dean Garnett started in the sport around 20 years ago.

Describing the scene as the "wild west", Liverpool's Garnett describes fighting in rooms full of smoke while fans puffed on cigarettes.

The 37-year-old, who coaches and founded his own gym and academy in Liverpool, refers to the opportunities which are now available to youngsters.

"You'd have never got MMA, post-16 courses which are government-funded 20 years ago," Garnett said.

"There's so much depth in combat for young people, it teaches them so many skills for life.

"It doesn't promote violence, it promotes so many other things the world needs right now, especially young people."

Can he follow in the footsteps of Manchester's Dakota Ditcheva, who won the PFL Europe women's flyweight belt in 2023 before triumphing in the global tournament the following year?

"It's easily the biggest fight of my career financially. From a professional standpoint it's a championship fight so it's a European title essentially. The biggest moment of my career to date," said Garnett.

"Winning the European title there's bigger fights for me out there - it potentially sets me up for fighting for the world title."

    Adiguzel v Garnett

Dean Garnett knows all about going far in the PFL Europe finals.

Last year he suffered heartbreak at hands of a fellow Briton in Lewis McGrillen in the semi-finals.

Manchester's McGrillen would go on to win the 2024 tournament while 37-year-old Garnett decided to give the belt another crack in 2025.

The Liverpool's man perservence paid off as he secured himself a spot in the final with two solid wins.

He beat Finland's Tuomas Gronvall by decision in July before submitting one of the tournament favourites Jan Cieplowski in September.

Garnett was the first man to inflict defeat on Poland's Cieplowski. He faces Frenchman Baris Adiguzel tonight, who has just one loss in ten fights.
