And another double fault. 0-30. No double faults from either player in set one, two in two points for Murray at the beginning of the second.

    *Murray 4-6 0-0 Nishioka

    Naomi Broady
British player on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

I wonder if it's nerves from the top players. Andy hasn't played a Grand Slam for almost two years.

He started to hit the ball more. But his first-serve percentage was down at 41% which simply isn't high enough.

Women's 10th seed Garbine Muguruza is the first player through to the second round today. The Spaniard made light work of Japanese player Nao Hibino, winning 6-4 6-4.

Sixteenth seed Elise Mertens is on track for a straight-sets victory too. She's 6-2 3-0 up against Germany's Laura Siegemund.

Britons Johanna Konta and Heather Watson are next on court five when that one finished.

  6. 'Murray has tried to up his pace of shot'published at 18:07 BST 1 September 2020

    *Murray 4-6 0-0 Nishioka

BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra tennis commentator

I am really impressed with Nishioka so far. Murray seemed to be coming out and playing cat-and-mouse tennis for the first 20 minutes.

I don't think Andy Murray particularly liked what he saw when he did that. He's tried to up his own pace of shot but Nishioka was a match for him.

  7. Game and first set - Nishiokapublished at 18:06 BST 1 September 2020

    *Murray 4-6 0-0 Nishioka

But it is not long before Nishioka gets his second set point and this time he can celebrate for real as Murray sends it out.

If Murray is going to win his first Grand Slam match in 20 months, he's going to have to go at least four sets to do so.

  8. Postpublished at 18:04 BST 1 September 2020

Nishioka thinks he has the set in the bag with an ace, he starts celebrating but not for long as it clipped the net on the way through.

The Japanese player then pulls one wide and that is one set point saved.

    Murray 4-5 Nishioka*

An excellent jumping forehand down the line from Nishioka brings him a set point.

  10. Postpublished at 18:03 BST 1 September 2020

Murray needs to win this game to stay in the set and makes a good start taking the first point, before the world number 49 takes the next two. Nishioka is lightning fast around the court. Two more points and he has a set lead.

Jiten Chandarana: Biggest problems for Murray are the first serve percentage and the inability to eat up short balls on the forehand wing.

    Murray 4-5 Nishioka*

Nishioka is going to have to serve this set out as Murray storms through the ninth game, ending it with successive aces.

Nishioka is now serving for the set.

  13. Postpublished at 17:58 BST 1 September 2020

    *Murray 3-5 Nishioka

A two-handed backhand, on the rise, from Murray only finds net and that gives Nishioka game point.

That leads to another epic rally from the baseline and Murray pulls a beautiful forehand on to the line to stay in the game.

But Nishioka then takes the next point to consolidate that break. He's one game away from the first set.

  14. 'Nishioka has adapted now'published at 17:53 BST 1 September 2020

    Murray 3-4 Nishioka*

    Naomi Broady
British player on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

Nishioka has started being more aggressive. Andy's tactics were maybe to slightly slow-ball Nishioka.

Nishioka has adapted to it now. He's coming forwards and winning points up at the net.

  15. Nishioka gets the breakpublished at 17:52 BST 1 September 2020

    Murray 3-4 Nishioka*

There's our first break of the match. A lob from Nishioka puts Andy Murray on the backfoot and the Japanese man does enough to take the second break-point chance.

A big moment in this first set.

How far will the Brits go? Who will win the titles?

Liz Curran: My dark Horse is Dan Evans.

Rod: Kyle, R2 not beating Novak! Dan v Andy in R3 could be a cracker, fingers crossed we get that clash, but Konta definitely in the mix for the title, playing very well and field is open, + fitness issues with Osaka and Serena. Men's is Novak, Tsitipas best challenger?

Nishioka saved two break points in his last service game, no need for that this time as he ensures we are still on serve.

    Murray 3-2 Nishioka*

We've had 19-shot and 21-shot rallies so far this match, now one of 23. If there was a full crowd in, they would be loving this one.

Instead, it's a handful of top players watching on from their balconies and that's about it. Still, any tennis is better than no tennis. 30-30.

  20. 'I don't think Murray is a contender for the title'published at 17:44 BST 1 September 2020

    David Law

If Andy Murray was able to remain fully fit at absolute match fitness all the way through he could certainly get to the second week.

But I don't think he's a contender for the title at all. Watch him prove me wrong now.
