And now the Ryder Cup is back on this side of the Atlantic too.

Rickie Fowler was proud of the fight the USA showed today in the singles, despite coming up short in the end: "Proud of all the boys. We fought like hell the last couple days to at least give ourselves a chance after that start.

And he had a word of warning already for the return back in America at Bethpage, with the crowd in the New York area set to offer a hugely intimidating atmosphere for Europe.

"It will be significantly different. There's nothing like a New York crowd or a Northeast crowd. So it should be very interesting."

Rory McIlroy said before this Ryder Cup that winning on the road was the hardest thing to do in golf, and it's certainly proved to be the case in recent runnings, with the past five being emphatic home victories.

So should we expect a huge American victory at Bethpage in 2025?

Manchester City football manager Pep Guardiola has been among those congratulating Team Europe - and specifically Tommy Fleetwood.

Guardiola is pals with Fleetwood, who the Spaniard said had been "teaching" him how to improve his golf game.

"You deserve this Ryder Cup more than anyone else, Tommy Fleetwood," Guardiola wrote on X.

"You are an incredible guy and as everyone knows an exceptional golfer. Love you. Congratulations Europe to get the Ryder Cup back."

Shane Lowry speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: That was the worst two hours of my whole career! Tommy, Bob and I joked having lunch that we hope it doesn’t come down to us and we’re celebrating all the way down the back nine. But it did!

"I felt like I did a lot of good stuff today and am very proud of myself and the way I fought. Jordan Spieth is such a good competitor but I will never stop fighting.

"I was disappointed to lose the last hole but how are you supposed to play it with those scenes? It was carnage. I felt bad for Jordan but that’s how it is. Sure in two years time at Bethphage, they will be on their side.

"On the 18th green, I thanked Luke Donald for putting his faith in me. I think I proved my worth this week."

Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy we'd probably expect by now, but even the usually stoic Luke Donald felt the emotions after leading Europe to yet another home victory.

More from a downbeat US captain Zach Johnson: "My competitive juices are flowing too much to function right now. I'll reflect on it and Team USA will be better off at some point. We will use this as motivation.

"You put so much time and energy into this and the process and journey is what is special, along with the people around it - my family, the team, the PGA of America and the fans. They're the fuel for the engine.

"The Ryder Cup is for golfing people. I'm not sure honour is the right word - it's more than that.

"We'll analyse it. I'm not making excuses. Europe outplayed us."

US captain Zach Johnson, speaking to Sky Sports, about his feelings after his side's defeat: "Still pretty fresh and pretty raw. If I have any immediate reaction it is to tip your cap to Europe and to Luke, they played great and they earned it.

"It's quite simple, we got outplayed by Europe. We showed grit and heart, it got interesting out there today. It ebbed and flowed, it had momentum. I'm proud of my guys.

"[The defeat] is on me, I made some poor decisions and I will reflect. Those 12 guys played so hard and fought for our country."

Tucky: Tommy. What a guy. Desperately want to see him win that major. It wouldn't feel right if he doesn't win one.

Bob MacIntyre, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “It was nerve-wracking. It was everything. I trusted myself and the guys around me. These finishing holes are tough so just about trying to get your point and see what happens. Thankfully we finished it off.

"It’s incredible. This is a completely different team from a few years ago. The top guys are absolutely solid and stalwarts on the PGA Tour.

"For me being in that team with these guys, I have learned so much. I am never going to forget this for rest of my life.”

Almost forgot Shane Lowry is still playing.

Does anyone care that he loses the 18th and finishes all square with Jordan Spieth?

Nah. Even Lowry isn't that fussed.

"The greatest week of my life," says the Irishman.

Europe's Tommy Fleetwood, speaking to Sky Sports, after his win secured the Ryder Cup: "I didn't want it to come down to one of us at the back.

"I can't wait to see the rest of the guys, the captain, the vice captains, our wives, our families and the staff.

"I'm so happy to play a part in it. It's been a bit bigger than I thought it would be when I saw the draw.

"I'm so proud. We have an amazing group of people, we always do. This year has been very different and the landscape has changed for Team Europe but I couldn't wish for a better bunch of people to do with this.

"We are one gigantic family and the bonds you make last a lifetime. This is just so cool."

On the emotions he is feeling: "Relief, pride, joy. I'm proud I'm just one of the people who gets to play a part. I love everybody involved."

On Europe captain Luke Donald: "Luke is amazing. We're all so proud of him. From the process starting he has been so so good. We look at Luke on another level.

"I'm so happy we could get it done for him."

Its was a struggle and it got tight at one stage, but the air just came out of Wyndham Clark down the stretch, presumably he'd heard it was all over, but nevertheless Robert MacIntyre played really well under the stress and strain of being in the bottom match with a sea of red on the board ahead of him most of the day.

For the man who always dreamed of playing in the Ryder Cup that will be a sweet moment for the Scotsman.

A tearful Europe captain Luke Donald, speaking to Sky Sports: "I am pretty emotional. It’s been a long process, an amazing journey and I have really enjoyed this one.

"It was stressful as the US put up a fight today so hats off to them. But I am so proud of my 12 guys. We formed a bond from day one and they gave me everything. They trusted me and they delivered for me.

"We started off great, which was what we needed. Then a few matches changed to red. We kept looking at the board and thinking, where will we find 14 and a half points?

"But we always had some guys at the back that looked good so it's not going to be quite as close as I thought it might be.

"I can’t even speak."

I noticed a bit of relief on Tommy Fleetwood - it was half celebration but there was almost exhaustion and a slump of the shoulders when he got the job done.

You could just see it writ large on Fleetwood's face,

Robert MacIntyre is stress free now and enjoying his golf, as he sticks his tee shot on 17 to nine feet with Wyndham Clark 20 feet away so the Scotsman has the chance to close out this match here.

Wyndham Clark sticks two balls in the soup on 16 and Robert MacIntyre moves two up with two to play after that extraordinary capitulation from the American.

You wouldn't know as he is running down the 18th fairway and hugging his delirious team-mates as they collar him.

Half expecting him to be chugging a beer in a minute.
