    Arsenal 2-1 Everton

A good spell of possession for Everton - for the first time in the match really - but it comes to an end in disappointing fashion.

Karoline Olesen plays a ball in behind the Arsenal defence but no one is running onto it.

    Goal kick.

    Arsenal 2-1 Everton

Everton continue to try and play out from the back but Arsenal are pressing well and the Toffees just can't get out.

Brian Sorensen's side need to change something because at the moment it seems just a matter of time before Arsenal score a third.

Rapid counter-attack from Arsenal to get Beth Mead running at the Everton defence.

Emily Fox is coming up on the outside and Mead slips the ball into her path.

The shot was on but Fox crosses and the ball is cut out in the middle. The shot was probably the better option.

    Arsenal 2-1 Everton

Everton put a ball over the top and it leads to a race between Katja Snoejis and Amanda Ilestedt.

Snoejis looks like she might just edge past but the Arsenal defender positions herself well to force the attacker to run into her.

Down goes Ilestedt and it's a free-kick to Arsenal.

Arsenal work the ball nicely from left to right with Victoria Pelova laying it off for Emily Fox.

Fox puts into another very tempting cross but it is just out of reach for Alessia Russo arriving at the back post.

You don't see this very often - a foul throw!

Emma Bissell is the guilty party for Everton to gift the ball back to Arsenal.

  9. Daly goal helps Villa beat Leicesterpublished at 15:01 GMT 20 January 2024

    FT: Leicester 0-1 Aston Villa

The first Women's Super League match after the winter break actually took place last night and Rachel Daly was on target as Aston Villa held on to beat Leicester City.

England striker Daly brought down Adriana Leon's cross in the 16th minute and fired an effort into the corner.

Leicester came closest late on when Deanne Rose's shot was saved and Ava Baker's strike on the rebound was cleared off the line by Sarah Mayling.

Villa's victory was just their fourth in the league this season.

The visitors jump up to seventh in the WSL table, while Leicester, now winless in their past eight WSL games, drop to ninth.

Things are going well for Arsenal today and they could receive a further boost with the news that England captain Leah Williamson could be in contention for selection when they travel to Liverpool next week.

The 26-year-old is eight months into an expected nine-month recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury and has been in full training with Arsenal this month.

Asked if Williamson could feature next week, Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall said: "Potentially, yes."

He added: "She's close. She's returned to full training. The game [against Everton] will be a little bit too soon but after that I definitely think she is in contention to be in the matchday squads."

  11. Postpublished at 14:56 GMT 20 January 2024

    HT: Arsenal 2-1 Everton

Arsenal dominated that first half and that is reflected in the stats.

It was 63% for the home side and 11 shots, 10 of them from inside the box and five on target. With three big chances created.

Everton only had one shot - but it went in and that is what counts. The Blues are still in this game.

  12. HALF-TIMEpublished at 14:52 GMT 20 January 2024

    Arsenal 2-1 Everton

Aurora Galli is the first player to be booked after taking down Victoria Pelova midway inside the Everton half.

Caitlin Foord pokes the ball wide from the resulting free-kick and that is the last action of the half.

Arsenal ahead, deservedly so but Everton have made them work for it after initially looking like they would just be swept aside.

That could make all the difference.

Arsenal haven't dipped in intensity since the scores were levelled, but Everton have stepped up and stifled their efforts - until now.

Lia Walti whips the ball across the box and Beth Mead leaps to head Arsenal in front at the back post.

The hosts have been working hard to try and regain the lead and it's probably deserved. Everton haven't done much apart from sit back.

    Arsenal back in front!

It is no more than Jonas Eidevall's side deserve but Everton will be disappointed to concede so close to half-time.

With the visitors penned back inside their own penalty area, Lia Walti swings in a lovely cross and Beth Mead ghosts in to head home at the back post.

  15. CLOSE!published at 45+2 mins

    Arsenal 1-1 Everton

So nearly the moment that Arsenal fans have been waiting for!

Vivianne Miedema gets onto a loose ball inside the Everton box, wriggles her way past a defender towards goal.

The angle is relatively tight but she still forces Courtney Brosnan to make a smart save.

We're into four minutes of added time at the end of the first half.

  17. Postpublished at 44 mins

    Arsenal 1-1 Everton

Having been completely overrun in the first 20 minutes, Everton are really scrapping now, fighting for every ball.

Arsenal are on top but the Toffees are at least making it much more difficult for them than they were able to early on.

  18. Postpublished at 40 mins

    Arsenal 1-1 Everton

Powerful run from Caitlin Foord to get herself into the Everton penalty area but Clare Wheeler gets back to make a crucial tackle.

Good pressure from Alessia Russo wins Arsenal a corner.

Everton get the ball away but it just keeps coming back at them. It's fair to say Arsenal have regained that momentum that was lost briefly after the break in play.

  20. Postpublished at 36 mins

    Arsenal 1-1 Everton

Arsenal turn up the heat again and swing a couple of crosses into the Everton box but the visitors are able to clear.

Caitlin Foord then drives to the byeline down the left and digs out a cross. It's too close to Courtney Brosnan, though, and Everton have a momentum's respite.
