Manchester United have had plenty of chances in the opening stages, perhaps they just took their foot off the gas, and a well worked set play from Villa has them ahead.

Nikita Parris is the latest to have a go at goal for Manchester United but once again it is a shot that doesn't work Hannah Hampton enough in the Villa goal.

Great defending by Danielle Turner as Ona Batlle tries to lead a Manchester United response, getting into the area but Turner reads the danger well, blocking the cross and the ball bounces back off Batlle and behind.

    Wow. What a goal!

Clearly something Villa had worked on in training, a great ball in from Lucy Staniforth and Rachel Daly gets across her marker.

What a glancing header, looping into the side netting. Technically brilliant finish from Rachel Daly.

GOAL - Aston Villa 1-0 Man Utdpublished at 9 mins

    Rachel Daly

Goal number 16 of the season!

Rachel Daly was always going to be Aston Villa's most dangerous player and she makes her mark with a wonderful header, flicking into the far corner from the set piece.

It was against the run of play, but a brilliant start by the hosts.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Man Utd

Aston Villa win a free kick just inside the Manchester United half, which relieves the early pressure they've been under.

Lucy Staniforth sends a good ball into the box and Aston Villa manage to win the game's first corner.

Katie Zelem is just recognising the space in midfield between Lucy Staniforth and Ruesha Littlejohn - the gaps are too big.

They have to communicate. They need to get flatter, whether they will now go and player to player mark her [we'll have to wait and see].

    Aston Villa 0-0 Man Utd

It feels like a Manchester United goal is coming as they continue to dominate these early minutes.

This time the away side move the ball well down the left before Katie Zelem, in a similar position to a few minutes ago, shoots from outside the box but puts this one wide.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Man Utd

Manchester United are finding a lot of gaps in the Aston Villa defence and Katie Zelem is in space outside the box but slips as she shoots and her dipping effort is comfortable for Hannah Hampton.

  10. Daly the key for Villa?published at 19:18 BST 28 April 2023

    Aston Villa 0-0 Man Utd

    Hope Powell
Former England and Brighton manager on BBC Three

She's had a fantastic season so far.

Having played as a defender, she knows where they want to be [positionally], and she can make the right movements [to take advantage].

She works within the width of the six yard box and stays very central.

Credit to her, 15 goals already this season and doing very well.

Manchester United show their attacking intent right from the outset as Alessia Russo spins a defender and charges towards the box. She shoots low and it is going just wide but Hannah Hampton gathers.

  12. 'Man Utd players enjoying their football'published at 19:15 BST 28 April 2023

    Aston Villa 0-0 Man Utd

    Fara Williams
Former England midfielder on BBC Three

As soon as they started building five years ago under Casey Stoney, Manchester United have experienced that pressure [to win trophies].

At the beginning of the season, when you aren't spoken about as contenders [for the title], when you're in that position there is no pressure on you to win it.

You can see these young players are playing in a relaxed way, they know what they are doing, and they are enjoying it.

    Fern Whelan
Former England and Brighton defender on BBC 5 Live Sports Extra

It's certainly a must win for Manchester United today, for sure.

They are obviously top of the table, but they've got teams hot on their tail, Manchester City, Chelsea and even Arsenal, so it is definitely a must win game for them.

I think we are in for a very, very exciting game.

The WSL golden boot race looks set to go right down to the wire this season. With previous holders Sam Kerr and Vivianne Miedema (injured) off the pace, it seems likely that a new name will claim the top scorer's award.

Two goals back from current leader Bunny Shaw, Aston Villa striker Rachel Daly could close that gap with a goal or two against Manchester United this evening.

Manchester United boss Marc Skinner speaking in his pre-match press conference: "We have had a little bit more prep time for this game. We came straight off the international break into Brighton and then Arsenal so it is needed.

"I think we will be playing the pitch as well, I think Villa have mastered that pitch very well. There are some slight adaptations in how we think we can exploit Villa but we also know that we have to be at our very best to stop them scoring.

"They are free-flowing so we have to try and stop that. We have been pretty good at that this year so I hope that we continue to do the same."
