Lucas Digne, 28, fell out of favour at Everton this season under manager Rafael Benitez, who said last week Digne had asked to leave the club.

The France international has not played since 1 December.

Following a disagreement over tactics and his role in the team, Digne returned to the Everton squad as an unused substitute for Sunday's home defeat by Brighton.

But Benitez said Digne's desire to leave was "very clear", adding: "I want to ask a question to every fan or former player. What would you say to a player who doesn't want to be there?

"It is simple. I had a couple of conversations with him, he told me what he thought."

Digne admitted he did not expect his time at the club "to end his way" in a lengthy Instagram post.

  19. Norwich lost to a better team - Smithpublished at 08:25 GMT 13 January 2022

    West Ham 2-0 Norwich

    Norwich City

Norwich boss Dean Smith says his side lacked "urgency" and "confidence" during their 2-0 defeat by West Ham and that the Canaries "lost to a better team".

Dean Smith, speaking to BBC Sport: "I'm disappointed with the manner of both goals we conceded. I felt it was a fairly even game in the first half and we restricted them to one goal.

"I wanted a bit more urgency from our wide players but unfortunately it lifted them a little bit as well.

"I thought we had a good 20-minute spell. We look like we lack a bit of confidence in the final third. I feel at times we refrain from pulling the trigger.

"We get battered from pillar to post from people outside that we're not fit to grace the Premier League, but we're still only three points from safety. I have got a committed and honest bunch of players."

  20. Norwich's dismal run continuespublished at 08:20 GMT 13 January 2022

Only six sides in Premier League history have accumulated fewer points than Norwich after 20 games.

And if their dismal run continues for much longer their hopes of survival look forlorn even if they are still currently within touching distance of fellow strugglers Watford, Newcastle and Burnley.

Smith's side were neat and tidy in possession but produced just three shots on target, with Idah's the only one of any note.

Aside from Teemu Pukki, who has scored five times this season, only three other players have registered a top-flight goal.

Unless the Canaries can add some firepower to support their Finland international frontman it is difficult to envisage them pulling off a great escape in their remaining 18 fixtures.
