Big, bold call from Graham Potter tonight to bench Trossard and Maupay. Arguably two of your best players not playing against a team like Chelsea, who are challenging for the title, shows his managerial skills and qualities as well as his risky decision-making.

When I played, I wanted the same team around me to build up those connections. There has never been any consistency at Chelsea, while the main core of the Manchester City team remains the same.

Graham Potter is resigned to never being a "sexy" Premier League manager - but the Brighton boss has become one of the most admired by working in the right environment.

"It is hard to be a sexy name when you are called Potter, especially if your first name is Graham. Then it becomes even more difficult to be sexy," he said.

Romelu Lukaku is a good enough player and has enough attributes to adapt to the way Chelsea play.

Steve in Milan: Lukaku isn't doing it against big teams or smaller teams. Didn't want him and he is not convincing me otherwise. Kai (Havertz) shows more movement and more of a threat. We won the CL without a static CF.

  7. Lawro's Prediction - more last-gasp goals?published at 19:23 GMT 18 January 2022

    Brighton v Chelsea (20:00 GMT)

Brighton v ChelseaImage source, BBC Sport

Rather than being rearranged because it was originally postponed, this fixture is actually being played before it was supposed to be, which was Tuesday, 8 February - because Chelsea will be away then, at the Fifa World Club Cup.

For that reason, Lawro doesn't have a guest who can get any points by correctly predicting the outcome at Amex Stadium.

Lawro can, though, and he doesn't think a last-gasp goal will save the Seagulls this time, the way it did at Stamford Bridge 20 days ago (and on several other occasions this season).

    He's going for a 2-0 Chelsea win.

Brighton have scored seven league goals after the 80th minute this season.

It has been their only goal of the game on every occasion.

  9. Is Lukaku putting himself under too much pressure?published at 19:18 GMT 18 January 2022

    Brighton v Chelsea (20:00 GMT)

    Karen Carney

I think Romelu Lukaku is better coming off the flank - driving at the opposition and finding the gaps. In the Premier League people deny you space. His hold-up play is not his natural strength. There are elements of his game he has to adapt. I wonder if he is putting himself under too much pressure and that is a massive factor as to why Chelsea are not seeing the best of him.

  10. What form are they in?published at 19:15 GMT 18 January 2022

    Brighton v Chelsea (20:00 GMT)

Brighton are unbeaten in four league matches, earning eight points - as many as they managed in their previous 11 fixtures.

Their tally of 28 points from 20 matches is their highest at this stage of a top-flight campaign since 1981-82.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have dropped points in eight of their past 12 league games, keeping just two clean sheets.

They are winless in three top-flight matches for the first time under Thomas Tuchel.

  15. Who next for Everton long-term?published at 19:03 GMT 18 January 2022

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Everton are exploring managerial options after an initial move for Roberto Martinez ended in frustration - with Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard now in the frame to replace Rafa Benitez.

The Toffees could not persuade the Belgian Football Association to clear Martinez for a return to Goodison Park.

Lampard is out of work after being sacked by Chelsea in January 2021.

Former Everton and Manchester United forward Rooney is in charge at Championship strugglers Derby.

  16. Team news - Brighton's Maupay and Trossard benchedpublished at 19:00 GMT 18 January 2022
    Breaking

    Brighton v Chelsea (20:00 GMT)

Brighton boss Graham Potter pulls a bit of a surprise with his team, dropping forwards Neal Maupay and Leandro Trossard to the bench. In come Steven Alzate and Danny Welbeck.

The only other change sees Tariq Lamptey start in place of Adam Lallana, who was struggling with a knock picked up in the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace last Friday.

Lewis Dunk remains out with a knee injury.

Brighton: Sanchez, Veltman, Webster, Burn, Lamptey, Gross, Alzate, Cucurella, Moder, Mac Allister, Welbeck.

Subs: Maupay, Trossard, Scherpen, March, Caicedo, Roberts, McGill, Leonard, Ferguson.

Chelsea also make three changes. In midfield, Jorginho returns, taking the place of Mateo Kovacic, who drops to the bench.

Christian Pulisic is replaced by Callum Hudson-Odoi in attack, with Mason Mount recalled in place of defender Malang Sarr. Mount looks likely to operate in a midfield three in front of a back four.

Chelsea: Arrizabalaga, Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, Hudson-Odoi, Kante, Jorginho, Alonso, Ziyech, Mount, Lukaku.

Subs: Kovacic, Pulisic, Werner, Loftus-Cheek, Bettinelli, Saul, Havertz, Sarr, Hall.

Team news is dropping shortly. This is what we know so far:

Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey is fit enough to start. Lewis Dunk, Shane Duffy and Adam Lallana are set to miss out.

Chelsea have no new injuries but remain without Andreas Christensen, who has Covid-19, as well as Trevoh Chalobah, Ben Chilwell and Reece James.

Burnley's game at home to Watford was postponed because of a high number of players with injuries and Covid-19.

Sean Dyche's side had requested postponement on Monday, saying there were only 10 first-team players in training.

A Premier League statement offered an apology "for the inconvenience and disruption caused to supporters who would have attended or watched the game".

It added: "We are fully aware that postponements disappoint clubs and fans."

The fixture was originally due to be played in December but was called off because of an outbreak at Watford.

  20. Ferguson named caretaker bosspublished at 18:47 GMT 18 January 2022

    Everton

Everton released a statement earlier tonight on their managerial situation:

Duncan Ferguson has been appointed as Everton caretaker manager for the Club’s upcoming games.

Ferguson will be supported by John Ebbrell and Leighton Baines, along with goalkeeping coach Alan Kelly.

It is the second time Ferguson has taken caretaker charge at the club, having guided the Blues to five points from three league games against Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal in December 2019.

An announcement on a permanent managerial appointment will be made in due course.
