From front to back, Newcastle have strong players. There is not a lot of pace, they are well drilled and well organised, but you can only go so far with that.

When you have so many players on the bench who could affect the game, you wonder whether it is worth starting with two wingers?

  2. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 36 mins

    Aston Villa 1-0 Newcastle

A goal, a disallowed goal and now a penalty shout, a very lively night for Ollie Watkins. He goes down under a challenge, bit of a shove in the back maybe? But nothing is given. There wasn't much in it.

    Aston Villa 1-0 Newcastle

Douglas Luiz does the Newcastle back three with a lovely disguised loft over the top, Bertrand Traore had come in from the right and would have been straight down the middle but it's a yard too strong and bounces away from him. Fine vision though.

  4. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 33 mins

    Aston Villa 1-0 Newcastle

Ahhhhh - that's so nearly two! Villa think they have doubled their lead but the offside flag is belatedly shown.

What a lovely finish from Ollie Watkins, played in behind on the left of the area and he leathered in a low shot before sliding away on his knees.

The flag came up though and he was just offside.

Half a chance for Newcastle as a cross from the right pinballs around and Andy Carroll just can't get a meaningful touch.

    Aston Villa 1-0 Newcastle

Aston Villa have won just one of their last 12 Premier League games against Newcastle (D6 L5), before this one, though they are unbeaten in four against the Magpies (W1 D3), winning 2-0 in this exact fixture last season.

Same again tonight? Newcastle have scored once in their last seven games. Ouch.

Much better, Fabian Schar with a lovely pass out to the right where Javier Manquillo is in space, he wastes no time in swinging in a cross which Andy Carroll heads wide under pressure.

    Newcastle looking brighter.

After a nervous start, Newcastle have come back into the game. They are moving the ball quicker, getting the ball back from Villa and making them look sloppy. But Emiliano Martinez has had nothing to worry about yet.

As it stands his side are up to eighth with at least a game in hand on most of the sides around them. Must make for good watching.

    Aston Villa 1-0 Newcastle

Lovely break from Villa, one pass over the top sends in Ollie Watkins, he flicks it into the path of Jack Grealish, whose cutback is helped on by Douglas Luiz - great skill - and Matty Cash has a low shot blocked.

    Two sublime touches in there.

Shelvey is a wonderful passer of the ball, he's not a box to box midfielder but you have to play to your players strengths. He has the ability to drop it into Callum Wilson's path, but we don't see it enough.

David Ljunggren: Newcastle reading from the same tired old script - defensive incompetence followed by mental collapse and then yet more defensive incompetence. This will end 4-0 to the home side

Newcastle sign unwanted players from bigger clubs. Villa sign the best players from lesser clubs. Villa's way is cheaper and better. John McGinn and Oli Watkins being prime examples.

This is better from Newcastle though, Callum Wilson stretches the Villa defence to win a corner. The ball comes in, Jamaal Lascelles heads it on but Tyrone Mings is perfectly placed to nod it out.

    Fine defending.

It was certainly a brave finish. Knew he was going to take a whack from the keeper.

Hmmmm, having just seen the Villa goal again I think that Ollie Watkins was marginally offside when the cross came in, but he was behind the ball so he's OK.

Newcastle are caught in two minds; do they press or up the tempo? They have to upset Villa, they have too much time on the ball.

Newcastle do at least manage to put a few crosses in but they are easily cleared by Tyrone Mings.

Only Dominic Calvert-Lewin (4) has scored more headed goals in the Premier League this season than Ollie Watkins (3), with Watkins netting 50% of Aston Villa's headed strikes so far this term.

    A very shrewd signing.

Ollie Watkins was delighted with that slice of good fortune. No wonder, he ends a run of nine league games without a goal.

There was a hint of offside, but it was almost a horizontal cross so that may have helped the cause.

A bright start by Newcastle is ruined by a bad error.

  20. CLOSE!published at 17 mins

    Aston Villa 1-0 Newcastle

So nearly two! Bertrand Traore whips in a free-kick which Ross Barkley meets with a header that slides wide of the far corner.

It wasn't as close as I first thought, actually. A very good chance though.
