    Aston Villa 2-0 Newcastle

Oh that would have been real nice! Ollie Watkins heads a cross back into the middle and Ross Barkley goes for a little backheel volley, sort of scorpion effort. Over it goes but you applaud the invention.

    Aston Villa 2-0 Newcastle

Villa are streets ahead of Newcastle, who can't get within yards of them at the moment. Jack Grealish, Ross Barkley and Bertrand Traore are pulling them all over the place.

Villa with 71% of the ball in this second half and still Steve Bruce is content to leave it.

A proper tackle from Matt Targett, who cleans out Javier Manquillo and the ball, Jonjo Shelvey then wipes out Jack Grealish in retaliation. All a bit feisty.

    Manquillo is hurt.

Newcastle are trying, you cannot fault the effort. You can see the shape, but it is so easy for Villa - there is no pressure on the ball.

Aston Villa are in great nick, they look a very good side on this showing but Newcastle are frustrating even the neutrals. Got to try something else surely?

Villa are full of confidence all over the park. Newcastle are getting frustrated because every time they lose the ball, Villa are very good with it in possession.

  10. YELLOW CARDpublished at 57 mins

    Aston Villa 2-0 Newcastle

Another booking, Jamaal Lascelles has enough of Jack Grealish just taking the mick out there and flies in to bring him down. Huge smile across the face of Grealish.

  11. YELLOW CARDpublished at 55 mins

    Aston Villa 2-0 Newcastle

This game in a nutshell as Andy Carroll lumbers into a tackle, he got there as soon as he could, but Marvelous Nakamba just glides across the pitch and wins it and Carroll catches him very late. Booked.

Andrew Neil: Bringing in young players with a lot of potential is obviously a good thing to do but only if you have the coach to improve them. Otherwise they stagnate. Bruce can only cope with finished article players (and even then doesn't get the best out of them)

I bet Barkley can't believe his luck left Chelsea couldnt get a game now above them in the table with 2 games in hand its a funny old game .

More lovely football from Villa, rotation and perseverance in midfield, popping it around until Jack Grealish gets into space and he threads the eye of the needle with a gem of a ball but Ollie Watkins hadn't read it.

Villa playing with a real swagger. There's a lovely balance to their team as they pop it around the back avoiding the Newcastle press.

Steve will give it 10 to 15 minutes and I'm sure you will see Saint Maximin coming back on after his long layoff, who could change the game if he gets the service high up the field.

And Villa could and should have put this one to bed straight away! What a chance. Newcastle have a free-kick but it's cleared and they counter so well. Douglas Luiz finds Ross Barkley who plays it out to Ollie Watkins inside the area.

His shot is hard but straight at Karl Darlow, it pops up to Luiz only about 10 yards out and he sidefoots it wide!

Not sure the logic behind Newcastle sticking with their Xi and shape here. Keep it at 2-0 down until 70 minutes?
