I don't think Ben's bowling is as patient and as disciplined as it could be. His batting is fantastic but there's work to be done with his bowling.
Philander and Morris came together at 235-6
Seventh Test fifty for Philander
Amla (78) and De Kock (68) put on 113 together
Three wickets for Broad, two for Stokes
Milestones: Anderson takes 300th wicket in England & Amla brings up 8,000 Test runs

Joe Root is mixing things up. A fourth different bowler of the morning as Ben Stokes comes into the attack.
The all-rounder only bowled 13 overs at Lord's but could have a much bigger impact in this game under cloudy skies.
Stokes starts OK but then gets too full and Kuhn gets on the front foot to drive for his third four of his innings.
A rare boundary for South African opener Heino Kuhn in a testing first hour.
Ed Smith
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special
It has been a difficult morning for batting. I think South Africa recklessly decided to bat first.
A solid first hour for England overall. South Africa will be relieved they are only one wicket down. James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Mark Wood have bowled well.
Mark Wood running in with purpose and bowling with real intelligence here.
Four shorter balls to Hashim Amla are followed by fuller delivery which pins the South African No.3 into his crease.
Wood appeals and Joe Root scratches his chin as he ponders a review, before deciding against it. It was a little high, so probably the right call.

The view from the press box, a wonderful vantage point. Just above the sightscreen, you feel like you are on top of the action.

James Anderson continues and off the final delivery of the over Heino Kuhn plays a risky shot off the back foot which just evades the dive of Ben Stokes. England getting closer.

He is quite fortunate that it hasn't hit him under the helmet.
Joe Root introduces Mark Wood into the attack and the Durham paceman immediately causes problems for South Africa opener Heino Kuhn with an impressive first over.
Three full-pitched deliveries are followed by a vicious bouncer which is too quick for Kuhn and he is struck on the helmet.
South Africa's physio is on the pitch again. Kuhn looks rattled but after a few deep breaths he regains his composure and is OK to continue.

If South Africa are to go and get a par score of 300 or 325 on this pitch then Hashim Amla will have to produce a score.
I don't think you can expect too much from Faf du Plessis without the cricket behind him.
Amla is the key.
Here's a clip of that wonderful catch from Liam Dawson off James Anderson to remove Dean Elgar.

The queue for the bar, miles before midday. The Test match crowd is a thirsty one.
Hashim Amla walks down the pitch to do a bit of gardening after some searching deliveries outside off stump from James Anderson. A cautious start from the former South Africa captain.
Graeme Swann

When Jimmy is bowling like this it looks like there is going to be a wicket every ball.
His 11-71 here against Pakistan was the best I have ever seen anyone bowl.

Stuart Broad hits the deck hard with his fourth delivery of his fifth over and Heino Kuhn flashes hard. Jonny Bairstow puffs his cheeks out as he collects behind the stumps. A whisker away from two back in the shed.

It is the kind of pitch that if you get on roll you could quite easily get a few wickets quickly.

Keir McCumiskey: Got a feeling that Liam Dawson is going to grow in to test cricket; very much like a certain Graeme Swann did.
Dave Wood: Breakthrough. What a catch from Dawson!
