Broad is proving the more economical of the England bowlers as he concedes three runs. His second ball draws a pull from Coetzer and a half-hearted appeal from Buttler, which the umpire stares down without response. That is the end of the first powerplay. England were 58-0 at this stage in their innings.

Steady away from Scotland who add three to the total from Anderson's fifth over. The Lancashire bowler has taken the innings' only wicket but gone for 29 from his 30 deliveries.

It is pretty much boundaries or dot-balls for Coetzer, who flicks Broad's first ball down through third-man for his seventh four. He has 35 from 32 balls. You can't fault him or his team - they have nothing to lose here. They might as well swing hard on anything in the slot.

Coetzer is on fire at the moment. He moves to 26 with a lovely back-foot drive through cover and then follows that up with another boundary, through the same area, this time off the front foot. The longer this goes on, the more memories of a certain Kevin O'Brien might start to creep in.

"There's not much margin for error, its a good pitch. Coetzer is middling the ball nicely. If you get through the first overs with the new ball it looks a good pitch to bat on."

Coetzer continues his one-man assault on the England openers with another standing slash that brings him four through backward-point. He may not be moving his feet but he must be seeing it like a football.

There isn't a lot of footwork going on from Coetzer. He is standing and waiting for Anderson to deliver. It keeps him in the game for five balls before the sixth is flicked to deep midwicket for four.

That wicket has checked Scotland, who are tied up by some tidy stuff from Stuart Broad, who goes for just one run. The Notts man hits the treble 20 with regularity and Coleman has no answer other than a flat bat.

"MacLeod went for a big shot, quite an ambitious one to play early on. McCullum has ruined everyone's batting technique. Down he came, trying to swat it over mid-off or somewhere having watched McCullum do it, and a bit of early relief for England."

Freddie Coleman is the new man. He fails to score from his first ball and Scotland's early momentum hits its first hurdle.

Scotland had made a good start but after Coetzer had hammered Anderson through cover for three, the bowler hits back to dismiss his opening partner. MacLeod dances down the track trying to smash the ball away to off a la McCullum but succeeds only in edging the ball to Jos Buttler. That will settle England's nerves somewhat.

Stuart Broad charges in and Coetzer hammers his first ball back past him for four. Broad rallies and concedes just one more run, whilst also drawing a few false strokes from the Scotland opener. One way or another, you sense this innings is going to be all action.
