  1. Wallace joins the leadpublished at 09:21 BST 17 July

    Wallace -5 (11)

Matt Wallace makes another birdie at the 11th - his fifth of the day already - to make it a three-way tie at the top of the Open Championship leaderboard.

  2. Flying start by Coodypublished at 09:20 BST 17 July

    Coody -5 (2)

An absolutely flying start by American Pierceson Coody who quickly birdies the opening two holes to jump up into a tie for the lead thanks to Jackson Suber making his first bogey of the day.

  3. Bogey for Suberpublished at 09:19 BST 17 July

    Suber -5, Valimaki E, Norris -2 (6)

Apologies to Jackson Suber as the commentator's curse strikes with a bogey just after saying he was strolling along Royal Birkdale. It's a three-putt bogey too which is annoying for these pros, and just shows you just can't let your guard down around this links course.

And after bigging up Sami Valimaki he also makes bogey at the sixth - our Finnish viewers will be sorry they bothered now! Anybody else you'd like me to jinx then just let us know via the Get Involved button...

  5. Suber moving smoothly alongpublished at 09:07 BST 17 July

    Suber -6, Valimaki -1, Norris -2 (5)

You have to hand it to Jackson Suber he's been almost shot perfect so far - and even when out of position like on the fifth he selects exactly the right shot, chipping onto the green away from the flag and two-putting for par.

He's playing like a links veteran in his Open debut! There's a long way to go but if he can get around in six under there may not be too many ahead of him if the wind gets up again later.

He's playing alongside Sami Valimaki, who our readers from Finland want us to mention, and rightly so as at one under he's well in this tournament.

Valimaki may not be a household name to many of you but he's a quality golfer - the 2020 Rookie of the Year on the DP World Tour and the first Finnish golfer to win on the PGA Tour. He's also done military service so don't mess with him.

And for our South African viewers let's mention Shaun Norris, who also birdied the fifth like Valimaki to move to two under - and he's playing with a yellow golf ball...

You’re never too far away from Tommy Fleetwood around these parts.

If you can’t get near the man himself on the course - and thousands did yesterday as they packed the galleries - then you will spot his image somewhere.

He’s even on the side of the double decker buses shuttling people in from the park and rides.

Will that AI photo of Fleetwood with the Claret Jug become a reality come Sunday?

  7. Another eagle for Hall!published at 08:54 BST 17 July

    Hall +5 (2)

Cornwall's Harry Hall is struggling a bit at five over, but incredibly he's just hit his second eagle of the Open - after chipping in on the 17th for one yesterday.

This time he's holed out with his second shot on the par-four second from 63 yards away after a crunching drive of 352 yards bombed down the middle.

So with two eagles how is he still five over? Well, he's played 20 holes now at Royal Birkdale and along with two eagles and two birdies he's also made five bogeys and three double bogeys!

Just eight pars so far in an eventful Open.

Today, we'll get to enjoy the carnage of some of the world's best scrabbling to make the cut.

At The Open, only the top 70 and ties make the weekend.

As we start day two, that line is at +1, leaving the likes of Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick (both +2), Jordan Spieth (+3) and Justin Rose (+5) on the outside looking in.

  10. Bogey for Wallacepublished at 08:42 BST 17 July

    Wallace -3 (8)

He was playing so brilliantly but a trip to the thick left rough on the eighth cost Matt Wallace a shot as he cards his first bogey of the day.

That's a bit of a momentum stuffer but he'll look to get right back on track on the next.

  11. Coody starts shortlypublished at 08:35 BST 17 July

Pierceson Coody, grandson of 1971 Masters champion Charles Coody, has a chance to add another big golfing prize to the family collection if he wins the Open this week.

The American began well on his Open debut, carding a first-round 67 - which he described as a "great start".

So when the weather has been so hot and dry, just how do you try to keep the golf course playable?

    Tech of course!

This is the USGA TS3, or smart ball, and it can measure firmness, trueness, speed and detect the tiniest bumps in the green to let the staff know if one specific area needs more tlc than the other.

What they’re looking for is consistency across all 18 holes. Easier said than done when the weather is more desert than oasis.

  14. Wallace just misses the hat-trickpublished at 08:28 BST 17 July

    Wallace -4 (7)

You know what, Matt Wallace is hitting it brilliantly this morning. He hits the green nicely on the par-three seventh and his birdie putt only just failed to drop, for what would've been a hat-trick.

  15. Smith makes good startpublished at 08:22 BST 17 July

    Smith +1 (4)

A bit further down the field, 2022 Open winner Cam Smith has made an excellent start, capped off by a stunning approach to the par-three fourth.

Fully 214 yards from the tee box, he's got it to inside three-and-a-half feet and done the necessary to snag his second birdie of the round.

Back to +1 for the tournament.

  16. Wallace goes back-to-backpublished at 08:15 BST 17 July

    Wallace -4 (6)

Another one for Matt Wallace! Back-to-back birdies for the Englishman as he drains a 20 footer for birdie on the sixth - playing the hole perfectly hitting the fairway with a whopper 325-yard drive and then finding the green to leave that makeable chance.

Wallace has never finished higher than 40th in his six previous Opens - if he carries on like this then he'll smash that record as he currentl sits in second.

It's a great start, but sadly because we've been so focused on his shirt today we've already used all the pictures we have of him so far...

  17. Debutants dazzle at The Openpublished at 08:11 BST 17 July

    Suber -6 (2)

Jackson Suber's Wikipedia page must have had a bumper day of hits yesterday as he took a surprise lead at The Open. I bet the fact his middle name is Weatherington raised a few eyebrows...

Anyway, we perhaps shouldn't be shocked that we have a debutant as a surprise leader as that's been a theme for recent first rounds in the competition - with four of the past five Opens having a first timer leading, or sharing the lead, after 18 holes.

    Here's the list.

    • 2022 – Cameron Young
    • 2023 – Christo Lamprecht
    • 2024 – Dan Brown
    • 2026 – Jackson Suber
  18. What will the score be after round two?published at 08:06 BST 17 July

The leader is up and running with a birdie so how optimistic are you feeling about today's scoring?

Plenty of people in the red yesterday although only two players - Ryo Hisatsune (68) and Kristoffer Reitan (69) went bogey-free.

  19. Birdie for Suber to extend the leadpublished at 08:01 BST 17 July

    Suber -6 (2)

Oh this is all just too easy for Jackson Suber - he must be wondering what all the fuss is about with playing links golf and the Open Championship.

As the debutant has just clipped an approach out of the rough on the second and rolled in a 12 footer for a birdie to get to six under par and lead by two.

    Pressure? What pressure?
