Graeme McDowell has a US Open on his CV, his memorable triumph at Pebble Beach in 2010 starting a golden period for Northern Ireland with Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy becoming major champions the following year.

McDowell nearly won a second US Open in 2012, but his 10-year exemption from Pebble Beach ended in 2020 and this is his first appearance in any major since then.

The 46-year-old, who came through qualifying, has not been a regular contender on LIV Golf. Can he find some inspiration at Shinnecock?

Shinnecock Hills is one of the toughest tracks on the US Open slate. In the four times it has been held here since 1986, the average winning score has been -1.

For everywhere else in the same time period it is -4.

Even with those averages being massaged a touch by Rory McIlroy's -16 at Congressional in 2011 and Brooks Koepka's same score at Erin Hills in 2018, it highlights the test at this magnificent course.

  7. High winds force course changes at US Openpublished at 14:12 BST 18 June

Two previous US Opens at Shinnecock Hills ended in controversy as the greens dried out too quickly and some became borderline unplayable - but the USGA will not make that mistake again.

John Bodenhamer, who sets up the course, has put plenty of water on to keep it as soft as possible with the high winds expected, with the mantra being to "let Shinnecock be Shinnecock" with weather offering a natural defence.

"I think the wind this week will impact us more than any other US Open," said Bodenhamer

"We reflected on 2018 and learned a lot from 2018."

And with the winds we're expecting, it will still be one almighty test.

  8. Scheffler plays down Grand Slam pressurepublished at 14:10 BST 18 June

Scottie Scheffler would become the seventh player in history to complete the career Grand Slam if he is lifting silverware at the US Open on Sunday evening.

Not that he's putting any pressure on himself to achieve a feat managed only by Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

"It's kind of a funny thing," said the American.

"It's like, yeah, if I win this tournament, that would be amazing, but I think then I show up the next week, and it's like, 'OK, now Scottie's won the Grand Slam - he's won all these golf tournaments. Now where do we go from here?'

"So no matter what, I think as a player and as a professional athlete, you're never going to live up to the expectations of people.

"I think sometimes that's a little bit of the fallacy in our sport is like, if I win the U.S. Open, then I'm going to be satisfied.

"I've won all the tournaments, and my career is essentially over, and I've accomplished everything I could want to accomplish. But I think the goalposts are always just moved further and further.

"For me, would it be a dream to win the U.S. Open? Of course. But at the end of the day, the Grand Slam has never been a motivating factor for me. I always just wanted to be the best version of myself, and that got me this far."

156 players in the field, but the biggest player of the day will be the weather.

A breezy but not so bright start! Fog has rolled in to Long Island and the official line is ‘non-dangerous conditions’ led to play being suspended. The wind is up here at Shinnecock Hills and it still feels warm.

This wasn’t high on the list of expected challenges facing the players on day one at the US Open!

Firstly, you may notice there's no golf on - and that's because of some heavy fog on Long Island this morning, but don't worry we're starting up again in a few minutes.

We had 40 minutes of play this morning before the dreaded air horns went off to signal play had been suspended due to fog - players not being able to see where the golf balls were landing will do it.

Funnily enough, from fearing high winds at Shinnecock Hills this week, the US Open was suspended because the winds weren't strong enough to blow the fog away...
