  1. More putting woes for world number onepublished at 18:52 BST 18 July

    Scheffler -4, Molinari -2 (17)

Scottie Scheffler gives it an ironic fist pump as he misses yet another putt, this time for birdie on 17 - that makes it just three birdies in his past 47 holes at Royal Birkdale.

He's made nothing, absolutely nothing, on the greens - I legitimately think he'd have scored better with me putting for him this week.

  2. Postpublished at 18:52 BST 18 July

    Fleetwood -6, Rahm -4 (17)

Stick this one on the highlight reel!

Jon Rahm is on his knees playing out of the greenside bunker at the 18th and it's almost stone dead for par.

  3. Postpublished at 18:52 BST 18 July

    Wallace -3. Kim -7 (15)

    Oh, Matt Wallace.

A sensational tee shot leaves him inside six feet for birdie - but the putt doesn't drop.

A twirl of the putter in the air tells you all you need to know.

A par for him and for Kim Si-woo, who remains two shots off the lead.

    Fleetwood -6 (17)

    James Gregg
BBC Radio 5 Live commentator at Royal Birkdale

You don't hear that on the golf course.

You don't hear sounds, cheers, applause, adulation like that any time in the game of golf.

The stands are swaying - it's just a living tide of noise here at Royal Birkdale.

Genuinely, the hairs on my arms are standing up.

  5. Postpublished at 18:50 BST 18 July

    Fleetwood -6, Rahm -4 (17)

A disappointed look on the face of Tommy Fleetwood as he pulls his third shot left of the 18th green.

But that won't stop him soaking up the applause from the spectators at Birkdale as he walks down the final hole.

  6. Suber slips backpublished at 18:49 BST 18 July

    Herbert -9, Suber -7 (13)

Birkdale's bunkers are as penal as they come and Jackson Suber - who had never played competitive links golf before this week - is finding that out.

In the sand off the 13th tee, he digs one up the fairway but fails to get up and in from 79 yards and drops two off the lead as Lucas Herbert collects a par with minimal fuss.

  7. Bryson in bunker botherpublished at 18:47 BST 18 July

    DeChambeau -5, Burns -8 (13)

Horrible spot Bryson DeChambeau finds himself in at the 14th, jammed right up against the face of the greenside bunker.

He's trying one leg in, one leg out, shaking it all about trying to find an angle - he certainly can't play it towards the flag so he'll have to take his medicine here. Or can he?

He decides to perch himself almost sat down on the lip, lean into the sand and then try and blast it out. The ball clips the face then scurries across the green and off the back. It's out, but not great. Some physical effort though!

    Fleetwood -6 (17)

Tommy Fleetwood is being cheered down the home straight like an Olympic sprinter heading to victory.

The local favourite is far away from the line, though, and it could be a touch more distant if he drops another shot here.

  9. Postpublished at 18:47 BST 18 July

    Fleetwood -6, Rahm -4 (17)

Trouble for Tommy Fleetwood off the 18th tee as he finds one of the fairway bunkers and can only bunt his ball forward about 60 yards.

Needs to get up and down in two from 170-odd yards for a closing par.

  10. Superb birdie for MacIntyrepublished at 18:44 BST 18 July

    MacIntyre -3, A Fitzpatrick E (16)

    Been waiting for that!

What a putt from Bob MacIntyre over at the 16th as he drains for birdie from 33 feet.

He has ground his way around Royal Birkdale today and fully deserved that moment.

  11. Postpublished at 18:44 BST 18 July

    Scheffler -4 (16)

    Andrew Murray
Former European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

This is Scottie Scheffler - so you never know.

It's a difficult bunker shot of about 35 yards so if he can set up a birdie opportunity...

The trouble is you don't fancy him with the putter today. He's missed everything.

He's got to regroup. If he can make a 4-4 finish, he's still in it.

As Ken Brown observes, the greens at Royal Birkdale are far from straightforward...

  13. Lucky 13th for Gerardpublished at 18:39 BST 18 July

    Gerard -6, Young -5 (13)

After 11 pars and a bogey Ryan Gerard finally manages to secure a birdie on the 13th.

The American's tee shot hits the fairway and then a deft approach shot lands around 23 feet from the hole.

Gerard has had easier putts this afternoon but he nails this one to go back to six under.

  14. Aberg in contention for first majorpublished at 18:38 BST 18 July

    Aberg -6 (67), Lowry -4 (69)

A superb bunker shot at 18 from Ludvig Aberg and he tidies up for par and a fine round of 67.

The 26-year-old Swede has flown under the radar this week, but perhaps he'll be the dangerman tomorrow as the 2024 Masters runner-up hunts his first major title.

Shane Lowry has had another frustrating day. Three birdies and two pars spell a 69 for the Irishman, but he becomes the first player this week to card three successive rounds in the 60s.

A nice little footnote on the 2019 champion's week.

  15. Suber misses outpublished at 18:34 BST 18 July

    Herbert -9, Suber -8 (12)

Jackson Suber is dialled in with his irons. He uncorks another dead-eyed effort to set up a 12-footer for birdie on the par-three 12th, with the pin tucked away back left.

Not his best effort this time. Always right. Par.

Lucas Herbert underclubs and leaves a lengthy putt, but he negotiates it well and secures his three.

  16. Birdie for Rahmpublished at 18:33 BST 18 July

    Fleetwood -6, Rahm -4 (17)

Tommy Fleetwood chips onto the green with his third shot and almost holes it for eagle - just too much of a pop forward on the second bounce.

His birdie try from 15 feet is only just wide of the mark. The knees bend in that "I was so close to holing that" kind of way.

Jon Rahm gets the putter out for his third shot from just off the green and finishes off nicely for birdie.

  17. Scottie misses a tiddlerpublished at 18:33 BST 18 July

    Scheffler -4, Molinari -2 (16)

    The OpenImage source, Getty Images

Well, one of two things was going to happen, either Scottie Scheffler was going to find the key to putting and run away with things, or he'd crack and start missing tiddlers.

He's just completely missed the hole from three feet to make a bogey on 16 so I'd say option number two is what we're going for...

  18. Another bogey for Bobpublished at 18:28 BST 18 July

    MacIntyre -2, A Fitzpatrick E (15)

Ah Bob. A second straight bogey for MacIntyre sends him tumbling down the leaderboard after finding the greenside bunker at the 15th.

We asked if he'd find a couple of shots on the way in. Unfortunately, he's lost a couple instead.

  19. Burns goes closepublished at 18:23 BST 18 July

    DeChambeau -5, Burns -8 (13)

    Sam BurnsImage source, Getty Images

Sam Burns scorches the edge of the hole with his birdie putt, but he's getting closer to picking up a shot.

Bryson DeChambeau is still grinding, as he slots home his par saver for the sand save. Excellent work.

  20. Postpublished at 18:22 BST 18 July

    Fleetwood -6, Rahm -3 (16)

Any chance that Tommy Fleetwood had of reaching the par-five 17th in two looks to have disappeared - his tee shot has found a fairway bunker.

A couple of spectators sing a Fleetwood-related song as their man marches down the fairway.
