    Morikawa -3, Spaun +1, N Hojgaard +1 (14)

Collin Morikawa is still two shots behind leader Jackson Suber following a par five on the 14th.

The 2021 Open champion is putting himself in contention again.

The moment Rory McIlroy hit it, he thought he had missed it, but it toppled in off that left edge.

  3. McIlroy finally makes a putt!published at 18:55 BST 16 July

Rory McIlroy needs some birdie chances and he gives himself one at the par-four 13th after smashing a 338-yard drive into the lighter rough and clipping a short iron to 20 feet.

Can he find some long-overdue inspiration on the greens? Yes! It sneaks in the left edge. Possibly a turning point as he prepares to tackle two par-fives in the next four holes.

Coming off a superb two on 12, Matt Fitzpatrick overcooks his approach and is a touch timid with his 43-footer, leaving him a tester for par...and that one drifts off to the right so he gives that shot back immediately.

Xander Schauffele was bunkered in two but got up and down to remain in the red.

    Lowry -1, Koepka E, Rai E (13)

After his woes from the 13th tee Shane Lowry looks a lot happier on the par-five 14th.

The Irishman finds the centre of the fairway and splits his playing partners, Aaron Rai and Brooks Koepka, who are in the rough on opposite sides of the short stuff.

Open Championship debut for Pierceson Coody and what a brilliant opening round it has been so far. An impressive performance.

  6. Par for Coodypublished at 18:50 BST 16 July

    Coody -4 (17)

Pierceson Coody chooses to lay up from the fairway rather than go for the green in two on the par-five 17th but he doesn't find the short grass.

His birdie putt from 20-odd feet doesn't drop, so it's a par for the 26-year-old.

Fun fact - Coody is the grandson of Charles Coody, who won the Masters in 1971.

  7. Par save for Youngpublished at 18:45 BST 16 July

    Young -3, Clark +2, Aberg +1 (13)

Cameron Young escapes from a greenside bunker to save his par on the 13th, but Wyndham Clark fails to make his four after missing the fairway from the tee.

Rory McIlroy needed to putt that one. You can see him bending down and feeling the green, but that putt was a good one to hole.

  10. Welcome birdie for Fitzpatrickpublished at 18:40 BST 16 July

    McIlroy +3, Schauffele -1, M Fitzpatrick +1 (12)

Golf can be an unforgiving game, even for the greats.

Rory McIlroy has missed three four-footers today and he's left himself the same distance for a must-make par on the 12th.

But he makes this one. Level par would be a fantastic round for the six-time major winner, and with two par-fives to come, it is possible.

Matt Fitzpatrick taps in for his first birdie of the day from three feet while Xander Schauffele two putts for par.

Jordan Smith enjoyed his opening round today, shooting a two-under 68. Afterwards he was asked if there was a story of his tattoo of triangles he got two years ago.

"There is actually," he said. "Me and two other friends, who are both caddies actually, we went into London and had a bit of a boozy lunch.

"One of them said there's a really well-known tattoo shop up there. So we all got the same thing, Googling tatties for three friends, and triangles kept coming up.

"We all went and got the same thing and don't regret it."

    Coody -4 (16)

Open debutant Jackson Suber is a surprise leader of the Open and he might be about to get some company at the top of the leaderboard.

Fellow American Pierceson Coody has found the fairway with his tee shot on the par-five 17th, which is playing as the easiest hole today.

If he can birdie this hole, Coody would join Suber at five under par.

Finally some good news for Matt Fitzpatrick. A glorious dig into the par-three 12th sets up a golden chance for a birdie from three feet.

He wasn't a million miles off an ace, but he'll settle for a two given how this round has gone.

Rory McIlroy misses the green. He's completely out of sorts.

  14. 'Rai plodding himself around'published at 18:32 BST 16 July

    Lowry -1, Koepka E, Rai E (13)

    Oliver Wilson

Aaron Rai has been a little ragged hitting into the greens, but the rest of the game has been fantastic. It is so methodical. There is no emotion in it. He keeps plodding himself around.

  15. Bogey for Lowrypublished at 18:32 BST 16 July

The rough is that long you can't even see Shane Lowry's ankles as he steadies himself to play his second shot on the 13th.

The Irishman almost stumbles after playing it and after consulting shot tracker it briefly says the whereabout of his ball is 'unknown' before popping up as being in the thick stuff down the left.

Will he be able to get up and down from here? It's actually not too bad and he is able to find the middle of the green to give himself a chance of salvaging a par.

His putt from 20 feet snags the edge of the cup sending the Irishman to his knees when it stays up.

Meanwhile, Aaron Rai makes up for finding the fairway bunker by saving his par following a wonderful iron to seven feet.

  16. 'Schauffele has got a gameplan'published at 18:30 BST 16 July

    McIlroy +3, Schauffele -1, M Fitzpatrick +2 (11)

    Catriona Matthew
Captain of Team Europe at the 2019 & 2021 Solheim Cup on BBC Radio 5 Live

Xander Schauffele has got a gameplan and he is sticking to it.

He is hitting irons off the tee and laying up into positions. He is giving himself the best chance from the fairway with these tricky pin positions.

If you offered Rory McIlroy level par at the end of the first round, he would take that right now.

  17. McIlroy's round getting away from himpublished at 18:29 BST 16 July

    McIlroy +3, Schauffele -1, M Fitzpatrick +2 (11)

Rory McIlroy is edging towards crisis mode. After a missed fairway and green at 11, another putt stays above ground and he cards his fourth bogey of the round.

He isn't the only forlorn figure this time, though. Xander Schauffele misses a short one to drop his first shot of the day.

And it's still not happening for Matt Fitzpatrick, who misses a lengthy birdie putt and stays two over.

  18. Hojgaard over par againpublished at 18:20 BST 16 July

    Morikawa -3, Spaun +1, N Hojgaard +1 (13)

Nicolai Hojgaard's mini-revival is over with a bogey at the 13th and JJ Spaun also drops a shot. Both are back to one over par for the day.

Collin Morikawa makes sure it's not a trio of bogeys for this group by holing a short putt for par.

    Lowry -2, Koepka E, Rai E (12)

Having just birdied the 12th Shane Lowry now lets rip with several expletives after sending his tee shot way right into the rough on the 13th.

There's some mention about not committing to his shot and few other words that I can't type on here.

How quickly things change in golf.

  20. Young two off the leadpublished at 18:15 BST 16 July

    Young -3, Clark +1, Aberg +1 (11)

Cameron Young of the United States acknowledges the crowdImage source, Getty Images

Cameron Young is on the charge - an outstanding approach leaves him with a very short birdie putt, which the American drains for a third straight birdie.

Wyndham Clark, who won a second US Open last month, has his first birdie of the day - and he's had to wait a little while for it.

A 12-footer for a birdie on the 11th gets him back to one over par, the same mark as playing partner Ludvig Aberg, who sinks a putt from a similar distance to save his par.
