  1. 'Spa the track you take a penalty'published at 16:04 BST 17 July

    Rebecca Clancy
F1 journalist on Sports Extra 2

This is exactly the track where you tactically, if you are going to take a penalty for parts that exceed and what's allowed within the regulations, this is where you do it.

Max Verstappen did it to great success back in 2022. He took an engine penalty, started the race 14th, and I remember all the chatter on the Saturday night at Spa was, 'I wonder hoe long it'll take him to get to the front?' And the answer was, not very long. And he ended up cruising to victory.

The first lot of cars have made their way on to the circuit.

Oh no, Isack Hadjar calls the team radio to say he has the wrong visor on. No worries though, it is only a practice session so he can come in and get that changed without an issue.

Oscar Piastri's McLaren team are working away at his car after a hydraulics issue at the end of FP1.

The Australian is stood watching and waiting. Hopefully we will see him in the car soon enough.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen was fastest in the first session today, followed by the two Ferraris.

Fernando Alonso hops back into his Aston Martin after he stepped aside in FP1 to let rookie Jak Crawford take part in the session.

There was rain earlier in the F3 session and continued on to the F2 qualifying. Will we see rain in FP2?

Red Bull's Max Verstappen headed Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton at the top of the times in first practice at the Belgian Grand Prix.

Verstappen was 0.145 seconds clear of Hamilton, with the seven-time champion's team-mate Charles Leclerc third fastest.

The second Red Bull of Isack Hadjar was fourth fastest, 0.252secs slower than Verstappen, as it emerged that he Frenchman will have a 10-place grid penalty for exceeding his permitted number of engines.

Oscar Piastri is at the other end of the circuit, so McLaren will want that car back asap. They will not want to wait until the end of the session and for a recovery truck. They'll want to start work on it immediately for FP2.
